My dog scratches at doors and trash cans all day. How do I stop it?

This is unusual behavior. Make sure she has chew toys and plenty of exercise. I would also place carpet or rubber flooring under her pen to protect the floor. If it continues certainly have her teeth checked to make sure there is no pain, abnormal teeth or infection. If there is a dental problem your veterinarian can treat the specific problem and this behavior should stop. If this is a behavior that you would like to stop, I find that using a spray bottle filled with water and spraying a dog lightly in the face helps to correct the behavior. Also, using an empty can filled with coins and shaking it loudly can help as well. I used both techniques on my dog and it worked quite well. The can trick was by far the most effective in my case. I would recommend putting a baby gate in front of the closed door. This way Bobo cannot scratch and bother your door. He may continue to lay outside the door but this way he won't be able to get in or cause any harm.

This is just behavior commonly seen with her breed as they are dominant and challenging and require very strict and consistent training. These types of behavior can improve though this does require in person training with the help of a qualified dog trainer. I would encourage you to contact a dog trainer that can work with you and Sally in person to really take care of this behavior. I recommend you consider hiring a qualified dog trainer to work with you in person. You can try using positive reinforcement by focusing on the positive meaning when he listens to you and stops chewing you start rewarding him with treats and praise. Poor Remy! It sounds like he's quite unhappy for some reason. Behavior like this can be caused by anxiety, stress, boredom, or can even be a compulsive behavior in some cases. It's important to figure out the underlying problem causing him to do this in order to treat it effectively. I would recommend making an appointment with a veterinary behaviorist for an in-person evaluation of Remy - he/she can help you understand why this is happening and give you a step-by-step plan to address the behavior. Medication may also be helpful if the problem is stress or anxiety-related. In the meantime, I would suggest providing him with plenty of things to do so that he isn't so tempted to scratch things. Bully sticks, cow or pig ears, rawhide chews, or puzzle toys such as a Kong toy stuffed with peanut butter can often be helpful to help keep him busy and encourage him to settle. You can also try a DAP pheromone collar along with a natural calming supplement like Zylkene or Composure to see if this helps.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. At such a young age, skin parasites are high on my list as the possible cause. This requires anti-parasite medication to treat Browny with. In the US we use products such as Bravecto and Nexgard to treat skin mites, so something comparable should help with a mite infestation. He may also be dealing with a bad bacterial skin infection in addition to the mites or as its own primary problem. He may also need a 2-3 week course of an oral antibiotic and medicated shampoo such as Douxo PS Chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly until resolved. I would talk to your veterinarian about skin mites as the possible cause, a skin infection or allergies as the cause. If he does not have skin mites or a skin infection, this could certainly be a severe allergy such as Atopic Dermatitis. With Atopic Dermatitis, certain medications like Atopica or Cytopoint can prove to be quite beneficial and helpful at eliminating or reducing the clinical signs.
