How to stop my dog from pulling & chewing his leash for good?

A puppy explores the world by putting things in their mouth. This goes for ok things like food and chew toys, to irritating things like leashes, as well as dangerous things like rocks and socks. Certainly getting a walking harness that attaches to the back (behind the shoulder blades) is one way to prevent Chloe from being able to access the leash while walking. You can also try using positive reinforcement (like giving her praise or a small treat) after a few minutes of walking without grabbing for her leash. Finally, there is a product called Bitter Apple that can be sprayed onto things you want Chloe to learn are not ok to put in her mouth. Like the name suggests, this product tastes bitter and will hopefully help Chloe learn that her leash is for walking not chewing. I hope this helps!

It can help to try to build a positive association with the leash by walking him places he ants to go - towards his food at mealtimes, to the door to go out etc. Keep toys and ask him to sit and wait whilst n the lead in order to keep him focused. It can help to walk alongside a more experienced, buddy dog also so he is more inclined to walk and less inclined to play with the leash!

Harnesses actually make pulling a lot EASIER for your dog, which could be making the situation worse. If Abby doesn't like head collars (many dogs don't), Gentle Leader also makes a harness version called the Easy Walker that is great (I use it for my own dog). It doesn't go around the neck so you don't have to worry if they do pull, and the leash attaches to the front of the harness on the chest. When your dog starts to pull, it puts pressure on the chest, and also redirects them back toward you like a gentle leader headcollar does. This can help mitigate pulling and may make your loose leash walking training go a bit easier. Another thing you can try when you resume walking again from a sit and stay position, is to walk backwards a few steps! Many dogs will either be confused at first, and thus stop pulling in their distraction, or think it is a fun game and will come toward you instead of pulling away. Once the leash is slack, you can then walk forward again. You may look silly walking backwards and forwards in the same spot for a bit of time, but it can help with stubborn pullers.

When he stops and you tug on the leash, it will pull his entire head to the side you are pulling making it uncomfortable for him to the point that he should respond to your command. Be persistent with this technique and don't give in to him stopping in the road. Dogs test us and will continue to push boundaries to find out what they can get away with. I think you meant leash? Yes, gentle pulling on a leash while out for a walk is safe. It can take puppies several weeks to understand the purpose of a leash. If you puppies is coughing or snorting when pulling on the leash he may need to wear a harness instead of a collar. Obedience training will help you puppy understand to walk next to you instead of pulling on a leash. A leash should never be left on a puppy without you being on the other end - they can get easily tangled up and choke!

A good trick to start with is by teaching Spots his name, and the command "look at me". This involves taking a favorite treat, placing it in front of his nose, and then bringing it to your forehead while saying either his name, or the command "look at me". Once he looks up at you, praise and give him the treat. This will help him start to learn his name, and give you a better way to gain his attention. Puppies generally have short attention spans, so training sessions of 5-10 minutes max throughout the day are often better than one long session. if he gets too bored or distracted, simply stop the session and try again later. For the leash training, you may want to help Spots get used to being on leash just by having the leash hooked to him and letting him drag it around (with supervision in case he gets stuck on something). Giving praise, and starting out with short walks, before gradually increasing them can also help. If likes to bite the least, giving him a toy to keep in his mouth instead on the walk, or teaching him to drop the leash and then trading the leash for a treat instead can help him as well.
