My spayed puppy is weak and wobbly after a walk. What to do?

Hello. It depends on how long you are talking about. If she was spayed a couple of hours ago, yes, she would still be a little woozy. If she was spayed a day or so ago, then she should have all the anesthesia out of her system. Can you check her gum color? They should be a nice pink color. If the gums look pale, grayish or blue to you, she should see a veterinarian immediately. If color is good & it has been a few days, she may be low in blood sugar. Make sure she is eating & you can give her a teaspoon of Karo syrup or honey a couple of times a day. If you are still concerned about Dolly, please take her back to your veterinarian immediately. She may be in pain and potentially feel nauseous after the surgery. I would call the veterinarian that performed the surgery (if they are still open) to have them re-evaluate her. If they are closed and she is not doing well you can take her to another veterinarian that is open. She may not be drinking much if she is eating wet food. Poor Bella! I am assuming she is not walking because she is in pain. All dogs react differently after being spayed and some have a higher tolerance to pain. I am not sure if she was given any pain medications but you should call your vet and let him/her know that she seems painful. Your vet should be able to add or adjust her medications to help relieve the pain. Hopefully, she will be feeling better in a few days.

Often times when we see patients hugging close to walls and having trouble negotiating surroundings it's either their vision is impaired or they have severe spatial perception defects (think vertigo). It is possible that anesthesia can affect balance but it is normally seen pretty soon after a surgical process and not so far out. If she is having actual weakness as a problem with ambulation (walking) this will require a more in depth exam than we can provide online. Likely she will need a neurological work up with labs and x rays to find the source or her problem. For now I think you are doing everything correctly-keep her calm and in a small contained space (like a bathroom) to make her feel more secure for the time being. It is great that she is eating and drinking and having normal bathroom habits-these are positive signs. It sounds as if you are very good kitty parents. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Luna. I do recommend that she sees a veterinarian today. Her incision appears to be healing well. I do not see redness, swelling or discharge draining out. However, pictures can be deceiving. I am more worried that she is not eating. The diarrhea needs to be addressed as well. The veterinarian will examine her and take her temperature. A fever, for example, can indicate an infection. If you stopped her medications, which is reasonable given the diarrhea, she may be very painful now though. This too can affect appetite. The veterinarian will guide you on any testing or treatment options. In the meantime, keep her quiet, encourage her to drink so she doesn't become dehydrated and do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. It sounds like she is in pain and needs some physical therapy to help her learn to walk again. She has probably lost muscle from being in a cage so long. I recommend having her leg checked so you know where the lameness is from, like her knee, hip or foot, and seeing if there is a treatment for her lameness. They can also get her safe pain medication. She may walk better once the pain is under control. Use a harness and leash so you can assist her walking and get her up for many short walks during the day. Hi there. Different individuals can respond to anesthesia differently, just like humans. In my experience, it's not uncommon for some pets to be wobbly, confused, or otherwise "out of it" for up to 24 hours or so after an anesthetic event. As long as she's responsive and doesn't seem to be getting worse, this is likely normal. If she's still shaky and crying by tomorrow morning, I would recommend giving your vet a call as she may be painful and need some additional medication to help with this. For tonight, you can sit and snuggle with her if she seems to want this, or leave her alone if she doesn't want to be touched. Make sure she has food and water available if she wants it. Monitor for any bleeding from the incision site, pale gums, or increased weakness or acting less responsive, as these could indicate a more serious problem that needs an ER visit.
