Do spayed dogs need to heal before heartworm treatment can begin?

I am so sorry to hear about that. I think it will be fine to wait until Tuesday. A few days likely won't make a difference. I would talk to your vet though and let them to know to ensure they don't want to change their treatment plan any. Every vet clinic does heartworm treatment a little differently. I hope this helps.

Heartworm prevention should be given year round to be safe in countries with a heartworm problem like the US, but given that it's icy cold there, it's highly unlikely Bella will get it, especially if there's never been a case of it in your country :-) Yes, it's fine for you to take her on a trip in the spring. Recovering from a spay surgery takes 10-14 days, and while she should remain quiet and resting for that entire time, it will be safe to take her on a trip after that time has passed!

There are several medications used in the treatment of heartworms. The "slow kill" method (which is not recommended) involves monthly heartworm preventative. This will be safe for pregnant dogs. The recommended "fast kill" method usually involves the use of heartworm preventative, doxycycline, prednisone, and injections of melarsomine. Other than the preventative, all 3 medications can cause abortion or congenital defects in pregnant dogs. If you have not had her examined by a vet, I would recommend doing so as soon as possible. Depending on how far along she could be, ultrasound or x-rays may be used to diagnose pregnancy. If she is pregnant, then heartworm treatment should be placed on hold until the puppies are weaned. You can't judge pregnancy based on how a dog's belly looks. An enlarged belly could be fluid building up from heart or liver failure caused by damage from the heartworms.

There is really only one treatment for adult heartworm disease which is given by injection. The other method is just continuing to use preventative medications so they don’t continue to be bitten and infected with more heartworms. The hope is over time the worms will die. This may take years and the worms will continue to do damage to the body while they exist. Heartworm disease is complicated and devastating and the treatment does have the potential for side effects. Some veterinarians treat heart worms with a slow kill method by giving heartworm prevention monthly which will kill the adult worms over time and prevent new ones. The more common treatment is with injections to kill the worms quickly. Both methods have advantages and disadvantages. Doing it with a slow kill method is much less expensive. Captain should be fine to go back to his regular activities (dog park, etc.) four weeks after completing his heartworm treatment protocol. Until then, he should be cage-rested to minimize the risk of complications.
