How to socialize my dog who is scared of big dogs after an attack?

He can get used to bigger dogs if introduced to him slowly and if you remain persistent. It has to be in a controlled environment meaning that you bring the larger dog to him slowly. At least try to start with a dog who is not very active and that is for sure nice. He can definitely get used to large dogs. The main thing is associating that experience with something positive by for example giving him treats and praise. Consistency and persistence are key. Good luck with your pup!

Dog parks are pretty awful places to practice socialization as many dogs there can have "bad" manners or all crowd a scared or nervous dog which can make things worse. I highly recommend working one on one with socialization with friends who have calm, relaxed dogs in a quiet, neutral environment that may be easier and less scary for Teddy. I also recommend speaking with a trainer or behaviorist in person that can work on desensitization training techniques to help him feel more comfortable. As for with the new puppy, slow, monitored introductions with plenty of time outs if anyone gets too nervous or agitated, and plenty of time may help ease the transition.

Max will benefit from a group dog training class. Even if you go and sit and watch a class and get him used to sitting and watching other dogs while you are relaxed his behavior should improve. With a good trainer and meeting dogs in class that he gets to know and see weekly he should relax. He needs to build confidence and learn normal dog behavior. If you have a friend with an older, calm well trained dog that he gets used to you can walk together to help him learn to behave also. He’s at a critical age for improving this behavior so please get some training soon. Also neutering him will prevent hormonal issues affecting his behavior. Hello, poor Fiddle! He seems to be very scared by other dogs. I think the best way to approach this is by introducing him to dogs that are not overtly playful and pushy in a neutral environment. That is, you may meet with a dog you know is calm and low energy in a park just to have the other dog be around Fiddle to see if he tolerates this. Obviously, avoid any situation which makes Fiddle scared or nervous and don't encourage his fearful behavior with any rewards such as talking to him, carrying him, or petting him as this may equivocally teach him that it is ok to be afraid of other pets. Ultimately, if you're having a really hard time with Fiddle, you may need to have him evaluated by a behaviorist as it is never too late to work with them on improving a behavior. Hope this helps.

I'm sorry to hear about Maja's bad experience with getting attacked! That can certainly be a scary memory and can make a puppy fearful of new dogs. The best way to try to counter a bad experience, is to provide lots of positive experiences to help her gain confidence. This can only be done in a controlled setting, with dogs you know and trust, because we want the interactions to be positive ones. I recommend setting up play dates with friends who have dogs that are known to be social and friendly - but don't force Maja to interact with the other dog any more than she would like to. Trying to force her may only escalate her fear and make it worse. If it seems you're not making any progress and she continues to be fearful, it may be worth contacting a reputable trainer who can help facilitate her training and can offer specific recommendations based on the behavior and body language they're observing in Maja. If you don't know any trainers, your vet may be able to offer recommendations of people near you. I hope this helps!

Introduce her, gradually, to one dog then another and another. Do this in a neutral area, such as a dog park or field. Correct negative behavior/responses immediately and praise/reward good behavior. Use a pheromone product, such as the Adaptil collar, to help decrease any anxiety.Given her age, get her enrolled in an obedience class and puppy socialization classes.

Socialization and more socialization! The more that Lucky is exposed to in a positive manner, with treats and praise, the more courageous he will become. You will want to start slow and increase the amount of time for socialization periods so that it is not overwhelming.
