Hello. I think there may really be a need for your "smart" dog food bowl. Ideally, it would be connected to a program where the owner can input breed, age, neuter status, weight, activity level, type of food, kcal per cup of food & I am sure something I am leaving out to calculate the total calories required to maintain a sensible weight in that pet. The less the owner has to do, the better. I do not think it is necessary nor advisable to weigh water as you do not want to make judgements about water intake. Your program should be able to adjust for a wet vs dry diet, as wet diets are by nature, less nutritionally dense because of the water already added. Its all really just genetics and also certain breeds tend to live longer than others. Just like in people, disease and life threatening illness can hit at any age in life. Also preventative care medicine can play a huge factor in your pets lifespan as well. So its best to keep up with preventative vaccines, dental care, heartworm and flea prevention. That is not a reliable way of assessing calories burned in dogs. Usually it requires going to a veterinary school that has a metabolic lab to assess calories burned during work. Alternatively there are online calculators that give estimate calories burned but again it's not 100% accurate.

This is a very good question! It is always wise to be proactive about our pet's health. If you ever have concerns about how your dog is doing then a call and visit to your vet can help to set your mind at ease. Things to watch for that would indicate health problems include vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite and energy level, unusual behaviors and limping. Discuss food recommendations with your regular veterinarian. Brands such as Purina, Hills and Royal Canin all have veterinarians on-staff to ensure their food is top quality and nutritionally balanced. If you are feeding a good balanced diet then supplements of vitamins and minerals are not necessary.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is probably irritating the skin. I would try a collar of a different material. Some dogs are just sensitive to certain materials used to make these collars. My dog for example is very sensitive to collars made out of nylon and develops hair loss and dermatitis if used. I would encourage you to try one of a different material. Keep in mind that there is some getting used to on their end but it should not be itchy. Good luck!
