My Shih Tzu's skin infection not responding to meds. Mites?

I'm sorry to hear that Mungia is dealing with skin problems. A lot of skin infections in dogs can be secondary to scratching themselves from allergies. The can react to something in their environment such as weeds, grasses, pollen, mold or even something in their diet. I'm glad that bathing her seems to help. I would be very suspicious of mange with what you are describing. This will not be solved with antiparasite powders or antibacterials/antifungals. If you are seeing a vet doctor, then they should be able to scrape the skin and check for the mites that cause mange under a microscope. If it's a compounder or not a real vet doctor that has prescribed the treatment for Milo, then that would be the first problem. You will need to find a real vet doctor to help with this problem. With mange, they will need an injection of ivermectin or something similar once a week for many weeks (often months) until it's clear. Please look for a good small animal vet doctor and they will be able to help you with this.

Poor guy. I see a lot of hair loss and folliculitis (inflammation of the hair follicles) there. This appears to be a bit more than a simple allergy condition. I suspect your pet may have skin mites. I highly recommend returning to your vet and getting a skin scrape done to check for mites. If Oscar does indeed have mites, then there is a completely different kind of treatment for that. It looks like Molly has some type is infection. When she gets to the vet, they will likely put her on antibiotics as well as anti-inflammatories. In the meantime you should cut the hair short around the lesion, taking care not to cut her skin by accident. Wash the area with a plain antibacterial soap and be careful not to get water in her ear while you're rinsing. Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection. First of all, you will need to ask the vet to perform a skin scrape (or similar test) - this might reveal an infection. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Poor Guy! He could have an allergic dermatitis and a skin infection. He definitely needs to be examined and treated by a vet. If your vet is not able to manage the condition then you could take him to a veterinary dermatologist. I am not sure what medications he has been prescribed in the past, but it looks like he needs an antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory. You could also talk to you vet about trying a new allergy medication called Apoquel or Cytopoint to see if that helps, too. Your vet could also do a skin scrape and/or biopsy of his skin to help rule out other potential causes. Hope he gets some relief soon!
