What safe treats can my Shih Tzu eat besides her regular kibble?

Hi, It generally is a good idea to only feed dog food. It is specially formulated for dogs and most are properly balanced and have everything they need. Human food, especially fatty foods can lead to pancreatitis and other health issues. The dog food does not necessarily have to be for Shih Tzus. Hope this helps!

I would recommend giving her only dog specific treats, no bones (cooked or uncooked), or rawhides. There's a wide variety of dog treats available, but I personally like dental treats, such as Greenies or Denta Chews. Do not give her any human foods, as many are toxic to dogs. Carrots, squash, green beans and peas are all good choices, and a lot of dogs actually like them. Broccoli, cauliflower, bell peppers are safe but generally not as "dog approved." Never feed onions, garlic, or chives, as these will cause red blood cell damage that will lead to life threatening anemia when ingested in large enough quantities. Well I personally like Beggin Strips. My dogs love them, and there is no chance of a choking hazard. I never recommend rawhides due to choking and obstruction concerns. Normally I'd recommend pig ears, but I understand there is a salmonella outbreak now with pig ears. I don't do many treats because they really aren't needed.

Cooked chicken only - not raw. No butter, oil or spices. Really though, it is best to give dog food and dog treats only. Once you start giving human foods, often these little dogs will start refusing to eat their dog food and then it becomes a big problem. Hope this helps. Good question!

Yes, homemade treats are fine. There are plenty of recipes you can find online on how to make homemade treats. All the ingredients you list are OK and there are MANY more. Just google some homemade treat recipes for dogs and go from there. Just be sure you are not feeding too many calories. A lot of treats are not good especially for small breed dogs. A very small amount of peanut butter would not be toxic as long as it doesn’t contain any xylitol. It is pretty calorie and fat dense so I’d limit the amount offered. Same goes for a single sardine. Remember to keep treats 10% or less of Poochini’s diet.
