Is shearing a German Shepherd safe and effective for shedding?

The problem with shaving your German Shepherd dog is that the hair may not grow back in its original quality. It may become thin, or the quality of the top coat will appear like undercoat. There is no need to shave him to make him feel cooler. He is a beautiful dog.

A dog's coats is designed to capture air and use it as an insulator. In the winter, this keeps the cold out and holds the heat in. During the summer, this system holds the heat at bay and helps your dog regulate his body temperature. Without this insulating layer of hair, he is susceptible to heat stroke. So, shaving is not a good idea.

If Blue is having issues with skin irritation, heat intolerance or matting of his fur then grooming that involves shaving would be a good idea. However if there's nothing going on than shaving is not necessary.

I would not recommend shaving her as it will not resolve the underlying skin problem and may not regrow. I would start with a good quality oral parasite prevention such as bravecto, an omega fatty acid supplement and a medicated shampoo such as malaseb to address yeast overgrowth and surface infections. If not improving over 10-14days a full vet check will be required

Actually, double coated breeds have natural mechanisms for keeping warm and cool. I would not recommend clipping him as this interferes with their natural temperature management. His best bet would be to be provided a cool area to rest and lots of access to water. If it's too hot, make accomodations for him where you can control the temperature or bring him into the garage.

Some dogs do shed minimally, but Arjun is still young. You will see some shedding when his adult coat starts to come in, and you may see shedding during specific seasons such as spring and summer when it gets warmer.
