Is it safe to shave my pug? Will their fur grow back properly?

Not really a part from cold and hot weather (coat provides some thermal insultation for both cold and hot). Make sure you or your groomer use clean tools to do it as it is not unusual to notice skin rashes and dermatitis after shaving. That is not true. The fur usually grows back, perhaps softer than before unless there is an underlying medical condition. Dogs with a low thyroid condition or skin problems, or old age sometimes the fur will not grow back or it will grow much more slowly. Certainly the quality of the coat may change also. Great question! I have a Chow Chow as well, and I shave her every summer because she gets very hot in the heat. I typically shave her down to her skin, and all her fur has always grown back. It will take time for it to grow back fully, usually over the course of a couple of months, but both her undercoat and overcoat grow back fully. I would not be too concerned, I hope this helps!

Do not shave a puppy. You can shave the bottom to keep it from getting dirtied, but I would leave its other hair intact. Sometimes shaving at a young age can change the way the fur grows out. She will start losing her puppy hair by around 4 months. Later in life frequency of shaving or grooming will be determined by how fast the hair grows, and whether it sheds anyway, even if it is considered non-shedding.

Without knowing the cause behind the scratching, it would be hard to say. If there is a lot of matting causing irritation, a shave can help reduce the irritation and help with grooming or applying shampoos or other treatment applications. It would be best to clarify with your veterinarian seeing Meisie as they would know her medical history best.

For some dogs the coat and pigment in the fur can change with age. For some dogs the coat will also grow back differently after a close shave. As long as the skin underneath the dark hairs appears normal I wouldn’t be concerned about a change in fur color.
