Is my senior dog's poor walking caused by Gabapentin or Carprofen?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | 12 years and 4 months old | 60 lbs

My 12 year old dog has anal gland cancer and arthritis. She has been on Gabapentin and Carprofen for a few months and her balance and her ability to walk has gotten very bad! She really struggles to walk now and it's been worse the last week. Could it be because of the meds she is on? Could I try taking her off of the meds for 2 days to see how she does and if she improves?

Hello. I am sorry that your question was not addressed sooner. I honestly do not think the medications have anything to do with her symptoms. I think her diseases are progressing. It may be time to re-evaluate her condition. Please see your veterinarian who may want to make some adjustments or even add some medications to make sure Shep stays as comfortable as possible for her remaining days. Good luck & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
