Why is my senior dog peeing in his sleep and while lying down?

This can't be pleasant for you or for Ted! Urination during sleep can have several causes, including a urinary tract infection, seizures, weakness to the urethral sphincter (hormone related or not), or even "bed wetting" that Ted could grow out of. Regardless, the first step should include taking Ted to his vet for an exam, prostate exam (unlikely to be an issue since he has been neutered) and urinalysis to check for infection. This can be a sign of nerve damage, dementia or pain. If he is too painful to get up. And posture and go, he will just go on himself. If there is arthritis in the spine that is affecting the nerves he may not be able control it. Your vet can do an exam to see what the cause and what treatment options you have going forward

At her age there are several things it can be. Your vet can collect a urine sample to check for a urinary tract infection. They can always draw some blood to check her kidneys and blood sugar and for Cushings disease. All these can cause an increase in drinking and urination which will lead to accidents. If all of that is normal, than she may be getting incontinent and they have medication for that also!

The most likely fluid in a spayed female dog would be urine. When a dog dribbles urine or leaves spots of urine on the bedding I often think about urinary tract infections. Older dogs can also develop urinary sphyncter incompetence (or a weak sphyncter), making it difficult for them to hold their bladder overnight. There are also less common causes, for instance bladder stones or endocrine diseases. Your veterinarian will likely offer to run a urinalysis, a urine culture, and maybe some bloodwork on Sassy to determine what might be causing the urine leaking. There are antibiotics we use for urinary tract infections and if it appears to be loss of bladder control there are medications to help with that as well. I wouldn't say this is normal behavior, but it is common for senior dogs to develop fecal incontinence especially when sleeping. Most of the time there is not much to do although sometimes people try a diet change or probiotics. Some neurologic problems could also cause incontinence so if Millie has been having trouble walking or leaking urine I would recommend seeing your vet.

It sounds like your dog has trouble breathing which would cause foam coming up from the lungs (due to fluid in the lungs). Urinating frequently could be a sequel to not getting enough oxygen, which then can trigger the urge to urinate. Your dog may be suffering from a heart condition or tumor or other condition that can cause pulmonary edema. This is an emergency and you need to take her to a veterinarian right away, or to a pet ER, for an exam, oxygen supplementation and possibly diuretics and further treatment as indicated by the results of the exam.

Your dog could be suffering from a weal bladder, a urinary infection or urinary stones. I would recommend taking him to the vet in order to get it checked, he will need to have a urine test done and then he will be treated according to the results.
