My 11-year-old dogs are healthy. Do they still need parvo shots?

Are parvovirus immunizations injections definitely necessary for my two 11 years old dogs?

I do recommend keeping up with a dog's vaccines as long as their healthy. They could live for another couple of years, and it's important to make sure they are fully vaccinated so they do not get ill. As I said, as long as they are both healthy, I would get those vaccines done. I hope this helps!

Yes, I would still give Chachi his distemper and parvo vaccine. A life span is only an average for a particular dog, and some dogs do live longer than their predicted life span. Because distemper and parvo are such horrible diseases, it's important to keep up on a dog's vaccines no matter how old they are to make sure they are protected. In my opinion, it's best for his health to have this vaccine. I hope this helps :-)

Hi there. You are correct that the pups should be getting both parvo and distemper vaccines at this age. Normally, the actual vaccine that is given is a DAPP vaccine, which is a combination vaccine containing distemper, adenovirus (infectious canine hepatitis), parvo, and parainfluenza. So I suspect that's what your veterinarian is referring to - some vets may call it "the distemper vaccine" as shorthand for a DAPP, which does include parvo. But I would definitely recommend clarifying this with him/her at your appointment, to make sure everyone is on the same page about what the pups are getting. :)

No, he isn't too old to be vaccinated. A rabies vaccine can be given and boosted in 1 year, then every 3 years. The distemper/parvovirus combination (DHPP) can be given, then boosted in 4 weeks. After that, it can be yearly or every 3 years depending on the vaccine. Other vaccines, given based on risk of exposure, include Bordatella, Leptospirosis, Lyme and Canine Influenza. Discuss these as well as monthly heartworm, parasite, flea and tick preventatives. Consider having Fatty neutered as well.

Is my 2-year-old dog fully protected from parvo after vaccination?

Most adult dogs that were appropriately vaccinated against parvo as puppies - meaning 3 different vaccinations, given no earlier than 8 weeks of age and proceeding at 3 - 4 week intervals - are protected against contracting parvovirus, as long as they receive booster vaccinations as recommended. Typically, the recommendation is one vaccination on the one year anniversary of the last puppy vaccination, and then re-vaccination every 3 years after. Just one parvo vaccination is unlikely to be completely effective, but it may provide some protection, and if he contracts the disease it will likely be a milder form.

It depends on what vaccines they have had. Rabies and Distemper do not likely need to be bolstered. Leptospirosis or Lyme likely need to be. It depends on the type of Bordetella vaccine being used if it will need a vaccine. Yes, absolutely get the dogs caught back up on vaccines and I recommend to have them on a flea and heartworm prevention (pick Interceptor or Heartgard as they have the best protect against intestinal worms) too as stuff like that (no heartworms but intestinal worms) are often found at dog parks. That is a great question. Vaccinations and the benefits and risks should be discussed with your veterinarian. This is best because your veterinarian knows your pets medical history and whether all the vaccinations are still ok to do based on your pets immune system and current health. Another thing to take into account is your pets exposure to certain diseases. Most pets at least go outside to potty, so that scenario can expose your pet to certain diseases like leptospirosis (found in rainwater and the soil) and distemper (mimics rabies symptoms). And if your pet gets groomed periodically or goes to doggy daycamps or parks, then the Bordetella vaccination would be recommended to protect them from upper airway infections. Rabies however is the only legally required vaccination by law for pets to get. I hope that this information is helpful. Best of luck moving forward.

Hello. A lot depends on what might be considered a problem in your area. For example, there have only been sporadic outbreaks across the country of Canine Influenza, & Lymes Disease is more of an issue east of the Mississippi. The AVMA considers the core or necessary vaccinations Rabies, Distemper, Adenovirus & Parvovirus, all of which can be given every 1, 2 or 3 years.
