Should I talk to a vet about my senior dog's pain and end-of-life?

When I have the talk about quality of life with my patients, I tell them to measure the good and bad days. When the bad day far outweigh the good then the time has likely come. You as the owner know your dog best. When the pet no longer interacts with family, stops eating well, urinates or defecates around the house, uncontrolled vomiting or diarrhea or is unable to move with out pain are all indicators of a poor quality of life. Dementia is a terrible disease in humans and people. We can only imagine how the dog feels. I think taking her to your Vet for at least an exam to see if there are any medical conditions that they could treat to help her feel better. Maybe she has urinary incontinence and some medications would help. Also there are some treatments that help dementia, though it is progressive. I hope this helps in some way.

You know her quality of life better than anyone ever will. Your Vet and we can help you decide when it is time. I consider a decreased/poor quality of life when the bad days out weigh the good days. When an animal no longer hangs out with the family, can't get around well, has vomit, diarrhea or won't eat, is crying or whimpering then I consider that a poor quality of life. I don't think it is wrong to try some time with pain medications to see if you can improve her mobility. But if it doesn't work and you think she is in pain then it might be time to consider putting her to sleep. I wish you and Jade the best!

If you feel his quality of life is diminished then it is time. In my opinion, no veterinarian will turn you away or judge you for wanting to euthanize her based on the information you provided here. I always recommend looking at the dog's quality of life in making this decision. If it's a poor quality of life, then yes, euthanasia would be the kindest option. While I cannot ultimately make this decision for you, based on your description of him currently, it does sound like his quality of life has declined to a point where euthanasia should be considered. I apologize if that is hard to read, or if it upsets you. It's never easy to make this choice, but if it prevents him from having his quality of life decline more, it is truly a blessing for him. There are lots of medication options that are stronger than supplements and could possibly help Sampson be a lot more comfortable. You can even discuss non-medication options like physical therapy and laser treatment. Your vet can go over the best options for you and Sampson. Kisses to him!

To be completely honest, if he is doing worse and now becoming incontinent, it may be best for him to let him go. He's 14, in a lot of pain, and is now incontinent. There is no guarantee that laser therapy will work, and he will continue to be in pain. There does come a point at which there is no more that can be done for your pet, and euthanasia is then the best option for the dog. I know it's not something you want to hear, but you do not want him to continue to suffer. If you would like to speak with me about this further, please feel free to request a consult with them. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! What I usually tell my clients is that the time to consider humane euthanasia is when they stop being themselves. For example, when they stop doing 3 out of their 5 favorite things (eating, playing, or whatever these are), it is time to let them go without suffering. Of course this is if not considering treating the condition affecting them. There are always palliative pain control medications you could consider just from a palliative standpoint to try to make Boss feel better in the meantime. Sorry you are going through a rough time.
