My senior dog pants heavily after exercise. Should I see a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 48 lbs

When should you ask for a consult for an aging dog? She pants a lot after exercise. She is 14 years old. The vet thought it the back of her throat muscles relaxing so she can't breath in enough.

A consult would be a good idea in this case. If the vet was referring to laryngeal paralysis, a consult will help you figure out if treating medically vs surgically is the best option. If your dog is having difficulty breathing, blue gums or tongue or collapse is noted, get her to the emergency hospital immediately.
