My senior dog has a hard, oozing lump on his leg. Is it serious?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 13 years and 9 months old | 32 lbs

Hard nodule, top of his leg that is oozing somewhat. He keeps licking area. Yes, he has soft fatty areas. This is different. 13 year old dog

I recommend putting a cone on Slick so he doesn't lick the nodule, or you can put him in a Tee shirt if that will cover the nodule and that should stop him from getting to it. Please clean the growth with hydrogen peroxide and apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. It should dry up and start to heal if he leaves it alone. Also take a photo every few days so you can tell if it's getting bigger. The nodule may be an irritated wart or a benign growth which would be nothing to be overly concerned about. It it's a malignant tumor it will grow and even if Slick is not licking it it may continue to ooze or bleed. For a diagnosis I would take Slick in for an exam and they can do a needle aspirate and look at the cells under the microscope. Some nodules if they are small or narrow at the base can be removed with a local anesthetic and then the nodule itself can be sent for a biopsy. It is hard to say what the hard nodule could be without examining Slick and taking a sample first. If it is oozing, then it may be infected or it could be a cyst that has ruptured. Your veterinarian can take a small sample of the mass to determine if it is something of concern or not and if it needs to be removed. I hope this helps and I wish you and Slick the best!

That looks ulcerated. This could be a benign lump, but it could be malignant. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. Give Buddy's vet a call to make him an appointment, and put an Ecollar on him to keep him from licking it. You can get one from a pet store. Best of luck.

My senior dog has leg growths, licking and limping. What should I do?

Poor Ellie! Growths are common in older dogs, and may be either benign or malignant (cancerous) - unfortunately, there is no way to know what kind of growths they are simply by looking. Particularly since she is licking at them and limping, I would really recommend having Ellie examined by a vet. He/she can do a simple test called a fine needle aspirate to determine what these growths are and whether they need to be removed - this test involves using a small needle to remove a few cells from inside the growth for analysis by a pathologist. It's quick and painless, and can be done without sedation in most cases.

My dog's leg lump is ulcerated and he keeps licking it. What to do?

This is large and ulcerated as you said. Since it's on the elbow area that is difficult to bandage. You can put a long sleeve Tee shirt on Foster to keep the area protected from licking. I recommend cleaning it daily with a warm damp cloth and applying a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. Talk to your veterinarian about trying a course of antibiotics. They will reduce any infection which may help it dry up or make it less inflamed. This would be difficult to surgically remove at this point due to its size and location but getting a second opinion from a surgical specialist is what I would do if you want to consider surgical removal. Why is my dog licking a popped red lump on his leg with hair loss?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sadly a lot of skin masses can look the same. It could be a Mast Cell tumor (which is a cancerous growth that should be removed and biopsied), a cyst, a histiocytoma (though he is a bit old for that, they end to occur in younger dogs). Any skin bumps that is new, rapidly grows, changes or is possibly infected should be checked by a Vet. They can decide whether it should be aspirated and sent to the lab or removed surgically to send the entire specimen for biopsy. I hope this helps and I wish Boston the very best!

My senior dog has a black, infected, growing lump. Is it normal?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! A mass on the skin is never "normal," but it is not uncommon to see skin masses appear as patient's age. It is virtually impossible to be able to distinguish a benign versus a malignant (cancerous) growth based on appearance alone, which is why we typically rely on biopsies or fine needle aspirates for diagnosis. Fine needle aspirates are less invasive and do not require sedation/anesthesia, but only give us a small picture of the mass since we are only able to sample the cells present within the needle used. Removal of a mass with submission for histopathology (biopsy) is always preferred and recommended for masses that change in size or shape. If the mass on Bradley's leg is changing, continually infected, or is irritating/painful for him, it would be best to have the mass removed and submitted for histopathology. Even if the mass is benign, it is serving as a source of irritation/infection for him, and could potentially become malignant in the future.
