My senior dog has a growth. Should I remove it? What if it's cancer?

Pet's info: Dog | Dalmatian | Female | spayed | 9 years and 9 months old | 60 lbs

My 10yr old dog has a growth about 3 inches on her lower abdomen, aside from the growth she she seems happy and is eating well, vet said to surgically removed the growth. However my concern are what if it's cancer? Will the tumor grow back? What if they can't remove the whole tumor? Will she heal properly? The surgery is a little over $1000 and I don't want to put her through all that if she's gonna continue to be ill, she's had skin condition her whole life and this would be her second surgery

If your vet recommends removing the growth, it's likely a good idea. In a senior dog like Cookie, there is always a chance it could be cancer, which is why it's ideal to remove it to prevent it from spreading. If the growth is cut out with wide margins and the cancer hasn't already spread, it is possible that it can be cured completely without further treatment. The vet will do everything they can to remove the tumor fully, and I would imagine they would let you know if there was a concern that it couldn't be removed completely or if she wouldn't heal properly. I do advocate for removing growths in a senior dog especially if there is a concern it's cancer, but I highly recommend speaking to your vet about your concerns. Having an in-depth conversation with them may help allay your worries. I hope this helps!

I'm sorry that Foofie has a tumor! Given that she is very active and if she is otherwise healthy, I see no reason why the tumor can't be removed. The growth of this tumor is affecting her teeth, and it could affect them to the point she has difficulty eating. Not eating would lead her to be very weak and sick, and you want to avoid that. You can have the first vet doing a geriatric blood panel and urinalysis to see how her organs are functioning overall, which would give an idea of how she would fair under anesthesia for the tumor removal. My senior dog has a leaking grapefruit-sized lump. What should I do?

It could be that Lady has a cyst causing this lump. In a senior dog, it could also be a malignant tumor or a benign tumor. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain. If your vet sent her to a surgeon, then I would suspect that your vet believes it needs to be removed. I'm sorry you felt this surgeon was only worried about money, so I'd suggest speaking to your vet about a referral to another surgeon to get this lump diagnosed and possibly removed. It sounds like it's quite large if it's grapefruit size, and if it continues to grow, it could affect her ability to walk. In addition, if it is malignant, it needs to be removed as soon as possible. While it is impossible to tell exactly what type of tumor it is and give a prognosis following removal, it is likely that removing the tumor will make him more comfortable. Depending on the approach, the surgical site may be rather large and require some care and pain management at home. As long as Jake is otherwise healthy, surgery and anesthesia are relatively safe as well. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you have!

My senior dog has a cancerous lump. Should I trust vet's no-surgery?

At the age of 13 surgery in this location may actually not prolong your dog's life, but actually cause him more suffering, as, in order to remove this fairly large tumor, parts of the tongue and neck tissue may need to be removed. This will take a while to heal, be painful and will interfere with eating. I think you can trust your vet with the assessment. If you would like a second opinion, consult with a veterinary oncologist. I am sure your vet can refer you to one and will not mind.

My senior dog has a growth between toes. Is it serious or cancer?

Unfortunately without seeing Ray in person, there is no way I can diagnose what this growth is on his foot. In a senior dog, however, I would be concerned that it would be cancerous. It could also be a benign growth. The best thing to do is having him seen by a vet on Monday. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the growth to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. The vet most likely will want to remove it, and that will be a surgical procedure to do this, but only your vet can make the best treatment decision for Ray. I'd make an appointment for him for tomorrow. Good luck, I hope this helps!

That is a nasty looking growth, and yes I would recommend having it removed. You should have a geriatric blood panel and urinalysis done on her before surgery. That will help assess accurately her anesthetic risk, but keep in mind many dogs her age have surgery with no issue. I would also recommend x-rays of her chest in case this growth is malignant. Malignant growths on the paw tend to metastasize to the the lungs. I hope this helps!

Dog nipple lump: Is surgery safe for a senior dog with a heart murmur?

It sounds as if your vet is concerned that your dog has a malignant tumor, most likely squamous cell carcinoma. If there is suspicion about the malignancy of a tumor the best course of action is to have it removed. I can understand your concerns about Dahlia undergoing surgery but it would be safer and easier to remove it now, while it is smaller, then it would be if it was left to continue to grow.
