My diabetic senior dog is frail, blind, incontinent. Is this aging?

Hello, sorry to hear about Roscoe. This could be either of the two you mentioned, although there are still other things you need to consider such as uncontrolled diabetes. Bloodwork and a urinalysis may suffice in telling you wether Roscoe has kidney disease or uncontrolled diabetes or a urinary tract infection. If bloodwork and urinalysis come back negative then you could consider that this may be a cognitive disease. Other things that may be preventing him from urinating or defecating outside include any orthopedic or muscle pain. Especially if Roscoe has any arthritis on his back, hips or knees, he may be hesitant to posture to relieve himself due to pain. X-rays would and a physical exam would be best at detecting these. The weight loss was good for him and his health: however, his symptoms of increased drinking, urination and loose stool with accidents in the home are suggestive of possible diabetes or a urinary tract infection. His behavioral changes indicate he doesn’t feel well. I would highly recommend taking him to your vet for bloodwork and a urinalysis to check things over. Once we know what is going on internally then we know how we need to treat Elvis to get him wel again. I hope he feels better soon. Best wishes and take care.

Poor Quintino! I am definitely concerned about his lack of urination. Hopefully his diabetes has been well regulated, but that would be a concern. A urinary tract infection or a bladder stone would also be a possibility. If he is very lethargic you may need to take him to the emergency vet tonight to be evaluated.

Hi there. Increased drinking and urination, along with increased appetite, are very common signs illnesses like diabetes or Cushing's disease in dogs. I would recommend taking Jack to the vet for an exam and some lab work to help determine what's going on. Both of these problems are very treatable once a diagnosis is made, so there's a good chance your veterinarian will be able to help after some testing is done.

These signs are usually related either to urinary tract infection, or to kidney problem (failure) or to urinary incontinence. A blood test and urine analysis can rule out kidney failure and urinary tract infection. Urinary incontinence usually derived from a weak urinary sphincter (quite common in old age females). A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. It could be that her insulin needs adjusting, and the diabetes is causing her to drink more and then pee in her bed. It could also be she has another medical issue, such as kidney disease, causing her to drink more and urinated in her bed. I would recommend taking her into the vet first thing in the morning for a geriatric blood panel and urinalysis to see what is causing her to drink, eat, and pee more.

If Abel has been lethargic and not eating much, my recommendation would be to have him hospitalized at the vet as soon as possible to get his blood sugar under control, so I'd call them right away and see how quickly he can be seen again - even if the vet isn't free to talk to you when you call, I'd recommend you ask the front desk how quickly Abel can be seen. Untreated diabetes can definitely make a pet become much more sick very quickly, so now that you know it's diabetes I would get Abel rechecked. That way when you bring Abel in, you can talk further about the diabetes diagnosis, and your vet can help you become comfortable with measuring and giving the insulin. When I diagnose new diabetic animals, I usually have the owner practice giving injections of saline to their pet in the hospital so we know they will be comfortable with drawing up the correct dose of insulin and giving injections at home. Your vet will also likely want you to start Abel on a prescription diet formulated to help maintain a more steady blood sugar. I hope this helps and he feels better soon!
