My diabetic senior dog is frail, blind, incontinent. Is this aging?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Male | unneutered | 10 years old | 15 lbs

Hi, my dog just turned ten this year. He's been in my family since I was ten. Anyway, my family hasn't noticed how quickly this happened because they live with him but I live away at college. This time last year he was a fat happy dog. Then he started urinating alot. He was diagnosed with diabetes so we changed his diet. HE has since become extremely thin and frail. Sleeps all day. Lost his eyesight. He has no bladder control. He is worse every time I see him. Is this more than just aging?

I am very sorry to hear about Jackson. You mention his diet was changed but don't mention if he is getting insulin injections. Most dogs do require insulin to treat and control diabetes. If his diabetes is not well regulated this could be the reason for his urinary issues. I would find out if Jackson is getting insulin and if the vet has been checking his blood sugar levels with a glucose curve and also checking urinalysis to be sure he isn't getting urinary tract infections which are common with diabetes.
