How long can my senior dog live with fluid in lungs & heart murmur?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | 14 years and 5 months old

The vet said she has fluid in lungs and murmur in heart. He has her on Lasiks. She is also 15 years old. She is very weak and don't eat but a few bites of food a day. How long can she last like that?

It depends. Some dogs with appropriately managed congestive heart failure can live for years. Other dogs may only live days. Lasix is good for removing fluid from the lungs, but it is rarely used alone in treatment of congestive heart failure. Medications like enalapril and Vetmedin are commonly used alongside Lasix. I would recommend discussing these additional medications with your vet.
