How to help my senior dog with dementia who won't sleep and falls?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | 14 years and 8 months old

Hello, my dog had Dementia and has been staying up through the night. He is very tired and keeps falling asleep while standing and then crashing on the floor. He doesn’t want to go to sleep and I’m scared he will hurt himself from falling so much.

You will need to take puma to a veterinarian for an exam. He may not want to lie down due to arthritis pain. So this needs to be assessed and treated with pain medication. As for the dementia: Once dementia (canine cognitive disorder) is diagnosed, there are several possibilities to make him happier (and you too...):
1) leave a night light or small lamp on in the room where he spends most of the night. 2) Unless Puma is deaf, you can leave a radio on (quietly playing) 3) Ask your veterinarian about prescribing Selegiline, a drug which helps dogs, cats and humans with dementia. It does work very well relieving the signs of dementia (pacing, crying, not lying down, confusion, etc.)

Hi there. A exam with your vet would be a good idea to make sure he isn't staying up for another reason. You can also try 4 mg of melatonin 1 hour before bed to help him sleep.

There are medications for this condition (known as cognitive dysfunction) that can be very helpful. I recommend having a discussion with your vet about her current behavior, so they can help provide the appropriate meds. I would do try the medication first, before considering putting her down. There is a possibility that with medication, she could act less anxious and appear more happy. I hope that helps and she gets better soon.

My old dog shows dementia signs. How can I ensure her quality of life?

Dementia is easily treated. You should make an appointment with your vet to rule out other diseases. Should the diagnosis be that Betsey suffers from dementia (typical signs are pacing at night, crying, not knowing where she is , needing you to "save" her from loneliness), there is a medication that can be given which will alleviate all those signs. The medication is called Selegiline (generic name) or brandname Anipryl. In the meantime you can leave a small lamp on at night, and leave the radio on(unless she is deaf). That often helps, too.

I'd have Gomez seen by a vet for this problem. It could be he is suffering from canine cognitive dysfunction, which can cause dogs to not sleep at night. If he does have it, the vet can diagnose it and can discuss things to do to help with it.

This could be anxiety as you suggest, or it could be canine cognitive dysfunction (doggy dementia). CCG often includes restless/wakeful behavior at night and sleeping during the day. It can also include loss of house-training, failure to recognize family members and confused or wandering behavior. Melatonin and/or Benadryl are considered generally safe medications to give before bed to help promote sleep. There are also medications and prescription diets made especially for CCD if that is what’s happening to Sherwood. Talk with your vet to see if s/he agrees and to discuss options and doses.

Hello. Actually, we do see a type of sundowners in elderly dogs. We call the canine cognitive dysfunction. Some dogs do quite well on a medication called selegemine, others do well on Trazodone, while others need Xanax & melatonin.
