What to do for my senior pug with cough, weight loss, and not eating?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Female | spayed

My 13+ year old pug has a bad dry cough and has stopped eating her kibbles for a couple of days. We offered her rice and she ate it but she has lost weight over the last month or so. She has had strokes in the past and recently her legs will sometimes give out on her. She has been pooping in the house for the last couple of months, she seems to be going either blind/deaf or both and has growled a few times at us. I'm not sure what to do.

I am so sorry that your elderly pug is so ill. Her symptoms are highly suggestive of underlying heart disease or even pneumonia. I would highly recommend taking her to your vet for an exam and some diagnostic testing (i.e. bloodwork or x-rays) and to discuss quality of life. : ( Poor Luxy. I hope that she ultimately is able to pull through this and recover. Best wishes and take care.
