My senior Chihuahua has stomach pain and won't jump. What can I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 10 years and 9 months old | 4 lbs

My 10 year old Chihuahua has been experiencing mild/moderate lower abdomen pain for the past 3 days. She does not have diarrhea or vomiting. She's careful about not running or jumping (usually run and jumps). She will eat/drink but only if I feed her. She's usually very healthy/happy, so this has me quite worried. I'm worried it's serious because she still eats/drinks whereas she won't when she has a stomach bug. Please help!

I am very sorry to hear that Poppy is experiencing these problems, I am sure it is very unsettling for you both. There are a number of potential causes of such clinical signs, including dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, parasite infestation, infection, and ingestion of a toxin or poison. I would believe the most likely cause based on your description is that Poppy has a mild gastrointestinal infection or she ate something she shouldn't have.

Because you have only noticed these signs over the course of a few days I would continue to monitor Poppy at home. Here is what you can do to help her;

Rest Poppy's gastrointestinal tract by holding back food for a few hours. Then you can continue with a bland and easily digested food of the boiled chicken breast and white rice diet and provide plenty of fresh water. I also find that boiled, mashed skinless sweet potato is helpful for diarrhoea if she develops any.

If Poppy does not improve, has profuse vomiting or diarrhoea, you notice fresh blood, Poppy seems lethargic, in pain or depressed I would advise a trip to the veterinarian.

If Maggie is not showing any signs from gastrointestinal tract, like vomiting or diarrhea, blockage will be a very unlikely explanation of her discomfort. If she has difficulties to jump, or if she is refusing to jump at all, I would suspect that she has spinal pain (which may look very similar to abdominal pain) or pain in the hind legs (hips, knees). If she continues to be uncomfortable and not herself, I would recommend to see your local vets to find out what is going on and give her the right treatment. At the moment, I don't think there are any remedies that you can treat her at home with.

Since so many things can cause digestive upset, I would advise that you have Bambi evaluated by your veterinarian. They can perform a physical exam, look at a fecal sample for signs of intestinal worms, advise blood tests, or even more specialized tests to assess the intestinal tract. Imaging studies such as X-Ray, Ultrasounds, or even an endoscopic exam with a special instrument to look inside of the stomach and intestinal tract. Possible causes include dietary indiscretion (eating things she shouldn't), intestinal worms, food allergy, pancreatitis, other internal organ problems, inflammatory bowel disease, etc. Once the problem is determined, your veterinarian can recommend the appropriate food. They may even suggest a bland diet for a while to see if the problem improves. I hope you can take Bambi soon so that both of you start feeling better.

My chihuahua is vomiting sludge and very sick. Should I go to ER vet?

I recommend taking Poppy into an ER clinic. It sounds like she is getting dehydrated and likely needs fluids and other medication to make her feel better. She could have a stomach infection, pancreas issues or even kidney problems. Some cases need lab tests, some xrays, others both, to find out exactly what is wrong. Once the veterinarian diagnoses Poppy they can review a treatment plan to help her feel better.

Loss of appetite, lethargy and pain can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. These are serious signs and a veterinary evaluation is needed to know what is causing these and what would be best to treat it with. I recommend that you have Oscar evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Why is my Chihuahua restless, can't settle, and has stomach pain?

It sounds like something is causing her discomfort. She should really be examined by a vet, if it continues. She could have a problem with her back, neck, or abdomen causing her some pain. Your vet can do a thorough physical examination to localize the problem and then treat. She may need an anti-inflammatory or pain medications. Hope she feels better soon.

My senior dog is vomiting, tired, won't walk, and in pain. What to do?

Poor Chika sounds very ill! If she has been throwing up for the past three days, doesn't want to walk, and is very lethargic, she needs to see a vet right away. She could have a foreign body, severe GI illness, pancreatitis, or even cancer (which is unfortunately common in older dogs). The vet can do a physical exam, routine blood tests, a urinalysis, and possibly x-rays to diagnose what is causing her symptoms and can treat accordingly. Please take her into an ER vet now.

It sounds as Peanut is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti nausea injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.
