I have a 10 year old Bernese Mt. Dog and would like to know what I can do to help her stay healthy in her later years. What recommendations do you have?

I would suggest the following to help Josie age gracefully;
Shorter duration walks, more frequently
Switching to a dog food with is intended for older dogs
Adding lean protein to her diet in the form of boneless boiled chicken breast or extra lean ground beef
Supplements for joint health- I suggest osteo trubenefits and omega benefits

Most senior dogs foods will have a lower calorie content than food for adult dogs.Most senior dog foods will also have added supplements for joints although the arthritic pets may need additional supplementation. I recommend a senior formula from Royal Canin or Purina pro plan. For pets with arthritis, giving them a supplement such as Duralactin or Dasuquan. This can help with the arthritis. You must be very carefully portion control the diet in order to get the pets to lose weight. If she does not lose weight and the portions are correct, I recommend to have her thyroid checked as this can make pets have problems losing weight. Keeping arthritic animals at a good weight is the best thing you can do to help keep them comfortable. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions!
