Thinking of a Samoyed for apartment living? Pros and cons to know.

If I had to keep a unsterilized pet at my house or apartment I would select a female. That said females go into heat cycle and may have to wear diapers to avoid staining the house. I favor the personality of female Samoyed over a male especially if they are not neutered.

Both can be great dogs. With either breed be sure you are committed to brushing daily and possibly having groomed monthly (or doing it yourself). Sammies were bred to be more of a northern breed and have a double coat. If you are in a very warm climate a GRT may be a better choice. In my experience samoyeds tend to be a bit more standoffish than golden retrievers. They aren't quite as goofy and approachable but they are majestic dogs. A lot depends on your lifestyle. Both are active dogs but samoyeds are a herding breed and may become bored easily if not given a job. Whichever you choose be sure to thoroughly socialize the pup and work on training from the moment you get it. Hello, and thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Coming from a fellow Siberian Husky owner, I think you could do great with this breed. I can tell you’re already thinking about how to provide enough mental and physical stimulation, which is the most important part of having a high energy breed. They can do just fine in a smaller house, as long as they’re given enough opportunities to run! Keep in mind though, that many huskies are escape artists, and often find their way out of fenced yards. I personally had to invest in an invisible fence in addition to the chain link, to keep my little runaway contained! The invisible fence taught her to stop testing the chain link. Your dog will likely need to have some good stimulation before and after your work days if it is kept in the fenced area alone, such as chasing a ball or going for a run. I believe a Shiba Inu is a wonderful choice! If you want a large breed but need a small breed due to tight living quarters, Shiba Inus are a great breed for you. Shiba Inus act like big dogs as they have a high activity level, but only take up the space of a small to mid-size dog. That said, this breed will fit happily in your apartment, but they need regular, vigorous exercise. King is gorgeous! Thank you for including a picture! I think the answer to your question really depends on your lifestyle and King's personality. If you are an active person who can take King for regular walks/runs and King will have the opportunity for regular play daily, then living in an apartment may not be a problem at all. However, if you will not be able to offer King enough opportunity to run and play while living in the apartment, he certainly might develop some bad habits from being bored and not getting enough activity. Does King like to go to the dog park or doggie day care? There are plenty of large dogs that live in apartments and get more activity than those that live in a house with a yard, so I wouldn't use that as my deciding factor, but you may need to make some lifestyle changes to make sure that King gets the exercise that he needs. All dogs need space to exercise and access to both physical and mental stimulation, unless you are able to take them out at least 4-6times a day a fenced garden really is recommended for any medium-large breed in order to limit boredom and destructive behaviors. I really would not recommend any retrieving/herding breeds (labradors/spaniels/collies etc) for such an arrangement but an older sight hound such as a retired greyhound which has been used to a kenneling routine and limited periods of controlled exercise would be expected to adapt quite well as long as you have the time for daily exercise and frequent toilet breaks

This is a difficult question to answer because it's all based upon her and your temperament. Huskies in general tend to be very active dogs who can become destructive when bored. They need lots of daily exercise to meet their energy requirements. They can also be very vocal dogs. Keep in mind, every dog is an individual so she may not act like this. ANY dog who is bored may develop bad habits. Being an outside dog means that she has been able to run around and has likely not experienced much structure in her life since she was not inside with the family. Living inside means rules, structure and routine. It's also unknown if she is housebroken or not. Taking on any pet is a big responsibility. Many huskies live indoors just fine. If you decide to adopt her, you will need to commit to daily exercise and be prepared for some bumps along the way. You may want to take off work for the first week so you can be home with her as she adjusts. You may also look into doggie daycare or a dog walker to come by and check on her during your work day until you know how she is adjusting.
