How to safely transition my new golden retriever puppy's food?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 17 days old | 10 lbs

I'm bringing home an 8 week old golden retriever soon. The breeder feeds them Nutrisource, but given its link to DCM I'd like to switch to Purina Pro Plan. What is the safest way to transition her food?

Great question and good on you for being aware of the dangers of grain free food! You need to do the switch slowly. Start by mixing together 75% old food/25% new food. Feed that for a couple of days, then do a 50/50 mixture. Again feed for a few days, then go to a 25/75 mixture. Finally after a few days of feeding that, you can give Callie 100% new food. Enjoy your new Golden, they are my favorite breed of dog!
