My rat's finger is red and black. Is it broken? When should I see a vet?

Just make sure to keep an eye on it and try to clean it very gently at least once a day with warm water and a mild soap, you can use a gauze pad to do this. Dry it carefully and then apply your topical treatment. However, if this stresses him out too much, just continue as you have been doing. Make sure his toes stay pink and warm and he keeps getting better. If anything at all changes for the worse, swelling, weeping wound, loss of appetite or activity level, if his toes change color or get cold, get him back in to see your vet right away. It sounds like you're doing a good job caring for his injury.

It sounds like he has a degloving injury to his tail. If there is bone showing, then he needs to see a vet right away. This can easily get infected, and he will need antibiotics to prevent it. In a degloving injury of a rat's tail, the skin and tissue do not grow back, and the bone showing may need to be removed surgically. This will be painful to him as well, and he will need pain medications for it. I would take him into a vet now.

Ouch, that can be a very painful condition when the raw nail bed is exposed or the nail isn't completely torn off. The nail bed does tend to bleed a lot. The best way to stop the bleeding is Styptic powder or Kwikstop, which are used for dogs who had their nails trimmer too short on accident. If you have some of that around, pour out a a bit (around 1/4 or 1/8th teaspoon) and dip your rat's bleeding foot/toe in it, then apply light pressure. You may need to repeat that a few times. If you don't have an styptic powder, do the same thing with flour or cornstarch. It will take a bit longer to stop the bleeding. Finally, if you can't stop the bleeding, he's limping, won't eat/drink/rest normally, or the bleeding keep starting again, he'll need to go the vet to make sure he doesn't need pain meds or antibiotics and to make sure the nail is fully removed. It sounds like the rathas suffered some sort of traumatic damage to the foot. It could just be a sprain, but likewise could be a fracture etc. If the rat is in pain it warrants veterinary attention. I would attend a local clinic where they can ascertain the extent of the damage and provide appropriate treatment.

Thanks for reaching out about Remy and including a photo. Pododermatitis is usually a lesion on the bottom surface of the feet. This appears to be torn toe nails, that are probably painful. Is is possible she caught her toes on some fabric? If she is painful, a veterinary visit is recommended for analgesia and possible antibiotics. Good luck.

If this is a rat bite there is a risk it will get infected, and it may turn into an abscess, or the infection may spread elsewhere, which can be dangerous to Bini’s health. Rats can carry a number of diseases that can be dangerous to humans as well, so I advise you to have Bini seen by a vet to address the potential bite. The area is likely very sore, and Bini will probably not let you clean it appropriately at home. Although rabies transmission from a rat bite is uncommon, it is not impossible, so your vet will need to address monitoring/vaccinating Bini accordingly. She may also need antibiotics, which can only be prescribed by a vet. Good luck!

It doesn't look badly infected to me, just monitor it, it should get smaller every day, if it starts to grow or to look more red and moist, then it's likely to be infected, in that case you will need to take her to the vet in order to get an antibiotic course.
