Puppy has worms, I'm itchy. Are worms contagious to me and other dogs?

I would recommend deworming him tomorrow and as a precaution, deworming all other pets and humans in the household is rcommended following the introduction of a new pup. Worm eggs need to be ingested in order to be transmitted so hands should be washed after handling the pup (at all times) and especially before eating. I would never recommend allowing a dog to lick people on the face as there is a small risk they may have worm eggs (or bacteria) in and around their mouth which they could transmit to people

Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose the exact intestinal parasites Juju may have. The appropriate dewormer can be dispensed afterwards and repeated in 2 weeks. You'll need to submit another stool sample to confirm resolution. Keep him away from areas with feces and pick up his stool immediately to prevent reinvention. A monthly preventative, such as HeartGard, will protect against heartworm disease as well as the 3 most common intestinal parasites of dogs (hookworm, roundworm and whipworm). For the itch, use a monthly flea preventative, such as Frontline, K9 Advantix or Revolution, for at least three consecutive months. Do this even if you don't see any fleas. In a sensitive dog, just one flea bite may cause severe itching. Vacuum everywhere and wash all bedding. Use an area treatment, such as Knockout ES or Indorex, to treat fleas that may be living in the environment. You may need to have your veterinarian perform skin scrapes to check for mites which can cause itching and hairless. Discuss allergy testing, hydrolyzed diets, antihistamine use and food elimination trials with your veterinarian in case there is an allergic component to the itching.

It sounds like he has roundworms. VERY common in puppies. The pyrantel is fine to use but I cannot speak to the dose as I don't know how many mg per ml it is. Use the dosing recommendations on the bottle. Puppies need to be dewormed with pyrantel at 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age when they get their vaccines. If he is still showing signs of worms after those three doses then he may need additional treatment. If he is itchy, at his age it is likely fleas or mites. There are intestinal parasites that are contagious to humans. These are hookworms and roundworms. They are contagious via fecal oral contact. Cleaning with regular cleaning products should take care of the problem. And also washing your hands before you eat. I have been in the veterinary profession for 16 years and have never gotten parasites myself. More than likely as long as you're cleaning regularly and washing your hands, you should be OK. Young puppies have to be dewormed every two weeks until they are three months of age, then dewormed every month until they are six months of age. After that, they should be dewormed every three months. Your breeder probably did deworm Patch, but it can take at least two treatments for all the worms to be killed. The first kills the adults already present, while the second kills the ones that had not yet hatched at the time of the first deworming treatment. He will be ok until Thursday, but if he does start having diarrhea or vomiting (heavy burdens of worms can cause this), I would take him into the vet sooner. As for the sores on his skin, that could be due to fleas. If he isn't up to date on his flea treatments, you will need to treat him for fleas. First, I would give him Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home.

Most intestinal parasites in dogs are transmitted by fecal-oral transmission. This means that your other dog would have to ingest infected stool from Lenny. I would recommend making sure you are picking up Lenny's stool in the yard and making sure you are washing your hands afterwards. There are a few intestinal parasites that can be transmitted to people so good hygiene, like hand washing, is important. You can always ask your vet to deworm your other dog when they are deworming Lenny just as precaution. If your other dog is already on monthly heart worm prevention (which is important for both dogs' overall health) you may already be covered as many of the heart worm preventions are also dewormers and treat common intestinal parasites. I would talk to your vet about heart worm prevention for Lenny and your other dog if they are not already on it. We generally start puppies on heart worm prevention monthly when they come in for their first set of vaccines.

Sherlock would certainly be at a higher risk as most of the intestinal parasites are usually transmitted via contaminated soil or by ingesting feces or contaminated food or water. I would recommend that you pick up Jasper's feces and anything that has contact with it as soon as possible and you are likely ok. Jasper is likely to be parasite free soon.
