My puppy is skinny after diarrhea. How do I help him bulk up?

Feed more food! Make sure Simba gets a good quality, commercially prepared puppy food (not food for active adults). Start by feeding the recommendation labeled on the bag, but if he wants more he can have more. Also, make sure that Simba doesn't have diarrhea and that he has been appropriately dewormed.

Human Cerelac is not an appropriate diet for a growing puppy. He should be fed a puppy milk replacer such as Esbilac or Pet-Lac. The diarrhea may be due to the diet or intestinal parasites (worms). Simba should be examined by a veterinarian. If left untreated, the diarrhea can lead to dehydration which is dangerous in puppies. Submit a stool sample to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. Consider a veterinary probiotic to promote gut health. You could also mix in a bit of plain yogurt if a probiotic is not available.

I would suggest getting a good quality puppy food, and feeding him about 75% of the amount recommended on the bag/day for about 3 days, and then increasing to 100% of the amount recommended for about 1 week, and then 125% for a couple weeks until she is proper size. At that point you can cut back to the normal recommended amount. Also, I would recommend deworming her, as this is often a cause of malnutrition, and also make sure she is treated for fleas, and vaccinated. Best of luck with Pluto.

If you can’t increase the volume of food the pups will eat, try to increase the calorie content. Also making sure you feed a high quality food will ensure that the pups absorb the nutrients appropriately. I like Royal Canin and Purina Pro Plan. First you want to make sure that Teddy is parasite free as parasites will rob his body of nutrients. Secondly, some breeds are naturally thin at his age. When he goes in for his next veterinary visit, make sure to ask the doctor about his weight. Lastly, don’t be in a hurry to put weight on Teddy. Rapid changes in body condition are not good. Instead feed a high-quality, small breed puppy food. Brands like Royal Canin and Science Diet have additional calories in their small breed formula which is different than a normal puppy food. Most puppies should be proper weight if they are getting fed puppy food, and in his case large breed puppy food. If you are concerned about his weight, then I would recommend getting him checked to ensure he isn't losing nutrition due to intestinal parasites, which is the #`1 cause for weight loss in puppies. Otherwise, he may just be naturally lean. I can see his ribs there but he is laying down, if he stands and his ribs are still readily pronounced, then he may be a tad bit underweight. Also if he has any loose stool, this can indicate other internal organ issues that should be checked by your vet. If he has an underlying issue that is not treated, then no matter what you feed him, he will continue to be undersized. Hello. At this point in time, you are probably better just using this weight management diet until you are pretty sure most of Ziggy's digestive issues are settled. Supplements will not help him to gain weight, holding food down will. That is the most important thing right now. If he continues to do well, you can add small amounts of a diet made for puppies to increase the caloric density of his meals. Over time, add more of the puppy food until you are pretty sure his digestive difficulties are over. Then switch to a regular maintenance food. Once there, he should do fine.
