Is puppy vomiting and diarrhea common after recent vaccinations?

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 10 days old | 19.6 lbs

My 14 week puppy got his third DA2PPV and his rabies vaccine yesterday. Ate lunch fine burnt ate dinner and threw up; ate breakfast next day and threw up and had a loose BM at 3 am before breakfast. Is this common?

Tis could be a minor vaccine reaction. I would feed her some chicken and white rice to help settle her tummy. You can also give her Benadryl twice a day. See link below. I would also notify your vet so they can make alerts in her chart for the future. If she corninues I would let you vet know. I hope this helps!

Hello, sorry to hear about Nova. Vaccines can definitely cause GI upsets as a delayed allergic reaction. This is generally self limiting but most of the time involves vomiting and a decreased appetite. If it doesn't clear up then I would be concerned with something else going on with Nova. You should bring a stool sample to your veterinarian to check for any parasites, giardia, or coccidia that she may have picked up, as those can also be a cause of diarrhea especially in young puppies. Additionally, due to her age, monitoring for any lethargy and poor appetite may be an indication to also test for viral diseases. Hope this helps.

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear that Nova is not feeling well. This is concerning in a puppy as this could represent a variety of conditions such as parvovirus, even if she has already received the first vaccine. Other possibilities include intestinal worms or even gastroenteritis or dietary indiscretion. I recommend that you have Nova evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. The sooner these types of conditions get treated, the better. Good luck!

If your puppy has not been wormed yet, this is the time. Intestinal parasites would be the main cause of diarrhea. Also, if you have been feeding him a different puppy food from what his breeder fed, there could be an indiscretion that is giving him diarrhea. Unfortunately there is always a chance of your puppy suffering from a viral disease such as parvo, especially since he had not had the foull course of vaccinations. If the diarrhea does not subside by tomorrow, or if Bear gets lethargic or starts to vomit, you need to take him back to your veterinarian for an exam.

Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If she refuses to eat the bland diet, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Why is my dog throwing up after a vet visit and vaccinations?

Coco may be stressed from the visit or having a mild reaction to the vaccinations. You can try to offer her a small meal of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice to see if this settles her stomach. However, if her vomiting persists or if any other signs of illness develop (like diarrhea, inappetance, or lethargy) I recommend having her examined by a veterinarian right away. Why is my puppy vomiting and has diarrhea after eating new food?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Pj. I'm sorry to hear that he is experiencing vomiting and diarrhea. If a dog is going to suffer a vaccine reaction, it typically occurs the same day as the vaccination. So this is likely unrelated. He may be experiencing GI upset secondary to all the new treats. I would stop those for now. Being so young and small, he should see his veterinarian if symptoms persist. In the meantime, encourage him to eat and drink small amounts. It will be easy for him to become dehydrated at his size. I hope this information helps!

My puppy threw up whole food & pine needles after recent shots. Why?

He might have eaten something spoiled that is causing this. withhold food for 8 hours then offer him boiled boneless chicken and rice every 4-6 hours in small portions. if he is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put him back gradually on his normal food. If he continues vomiting or is not eating, take him to the vet to get treatment.

Any time I have administered a vaccination and the animal then begins vomiting or exhibiting any other abnormal symptoms, I treat as a potential adverse vaccination reaction. I would recommend taking him back to the veterinarian that performed the vaccination to have him examined and treated for a potential vaccination reaction.
