My 3-month-old puppy is vomiting and has black poop. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 5 lbs

approx 3 months old, vomiting 10+ times per day, snotty/slimey w/ food vomit, hard black poop,drawed up and skinny. vet treated her for hookworms. she improved 1 day now back at it

It sounds as Roxy is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.

Vomiting and diarrhea can be a sign of a number of different diseases in a young dog. Intestinal parasites, partial obstruction from ingesting a foreign object or some infectious diseases could cause these signs. If the vomiting and diarrhea continues she could become dehydrated, and black stool could be a sign of bleeding in the stomach or intestines. I would recommend making an appointment with a veterinarian. You may want to try to collect a stool sample to bring with you so they can look for intestinal parasites - use a clean plastic bag and place in the refrigerator if it is going to be more than an hour or so before you are able to bring the sample to the vet. I hope Rosa is feeling better soon.

Hi there! Sorry to hear that Blacky is not feeling well. The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. For this reason, I recommend that you have Blacky evaluated by your veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. At the very least they can address dehydration if present and start her on anti-nausea medications. Good luck! Keeping my fingers crossed for your girl!

My new puppy is throwing up black muck with hair. What's wrong?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Please take storm to the veterinarian ASAP. Vomiting in young puppies can become serious very quickly. Parasites, foreign body of suction, and parvovirus are all concerns with an eight week old puppy. She should go to the veterinarian today, and they will likely recommend a parasite exam, and possibly apartment test. Depending on her signs blood work or x-rays maybe suggested if a foreign body is suspected. In the case of parasites, treatment is usually fairly straightforward but other conditions could require hospitalization.

My dog vomited a black worm. What kind of worm is it and what to do?

It is difficult to tell from your description what this may be. It could be something Roxy ingested and threw back up. If she is on monthly parasite prevention then she may be protected against most intestinal parasites. If not it could be a number of things and not all dewormers are effective on all parasites. I would recommend having an intestinal parasite test or fecal done on a stool sample by her vet. This can indicate what types, if any parasites she may have. Hello, sorry to hear about Roxy. I would recommend having her evaluated if her clinical sings persist, especially if she is a dog that likes to chew toys, sticks, or get into the trash. Our biggest concern is that she may have a foreign object she may have swallowed that is stuck in her stomach or intestines. Other causes in dogs her age include dietary indiscretions or infections. Why is my dog throwing up and pooping black? Is it serious?

Black stool could indicate blood in the stool. Vomiting, and black stool could be caused by parasites, change in diet, toxin ingestion, infectious viral diseases, blockage in the intestines caused by ingestion of a foreign body, or a mass/growth in the gastrointestinal tract. In the case of an unspayed female dog , pyometra (a potentially fatal infection of the uterus) is a possibility as well, and this is very concerning. Please have Cassie seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible, as vomiting and possible blood in the stool can lead to dehydration and anemia, and can be very dangerous if left untreated. I recommend taking in a fecal sample from Cassie to your vet as well, as that may aid them in making a diagnosis. Good luck, and I hope she feels better soon!
