Is $300 normal for puppy vet visits? Vet plan or pet insurance?

Hi. Great questions. Puppies should begin vaccines at 8 weeks old. Then they need vaccines every 3-4 weeks until the puppy is 16-18 weeks. It is then once a year after that. They do need a physical exam with every shot, they need a fecal rest in the first visit, and to start heartworm prevention. I would not be surprised that it does get close to 100 dollars a visit during these boosters. The positive thing is its only once a year after that :) I don't think you are being taken advantage of. Just know that none of us go in to this field to take advantage of clients. I hope that helps. And if you do feel it's too expensive, you can shop around. The cost of veterinary care is very much dependent on your area, so it is difficult to say whether or not this would be standard cost for these services and treatments. You could call another veterinarian near you for a cost estimate to compare.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Congrats on your puppy! We start vaccines (DHPP) around 7-8 weeks of age. You can set up his first exam and deworming now but he is too young to start vaccines. We give the DHPP vaccine every 3-4 weeks starting around 7-8 weeks until they receive 2 past 12 weeks of age. I’m a fan of Pet insurance. Depending on your dog and her lifestyle, pet insurance can be worth it. Unfortunately, pet insurance is worth the most for accidents and illnesses. Often the plans do not cover routine health care, but some plans do. Most plans also have a variety of options, so you can decrease the cost of the plan by decreasing the coverage. I have a number of clients that use Trupanion who has covered $10,000 bills without any questions. But those owners have a higher premium than some of the other companies who may not cover the same amount. I wish I could give you a clear answer, but for young dogs, I think a moderate plan for the first year is always a good idea. That will give you a good idea about if you think the plan is worth it long term. I would recommend contacting 3 companies and compare what they cover, your deductible, and your monthly cost. If I had to chose a few, I would compare Trupanion, PetPlan and Nationwide, but there are other good companies out there too. I hope that was helpful. There are many pet insurances available right now, and they are all slightly different in coverage and how you are reimbursed for medical issues. Most will require that you pay the vet the full bill, and then will reimburse you a percentage of the cost of the bill, so keep in mind that you will still need to be able to pay the vet bill at the time of service. A 10 week old puppy is old enough for the DAPP and Bordetella vaccine. The cost depends entirely on where you go. Exam fees vary from $25-$45 on average and shots around $10-$25 per shot.
