How to safely transition my puppy from moistened to dry kibble?

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There are a few things you can do to make his food more palatable while he gets used to it. For example, you may add low sodium chicken broth, veterinary approved gravy which you can get at your pet store or pieces of boiled chicken to it. Good luck!

Having a good source of a special treat like chicken is a blessing and a curse! IT sounds like he's learned that he can hold out for the food stuff. I would recommend very intentionally, slowly increasing the amount of kibble while decreasing the amount of chicken over about 2 weeks. Wetting and warming the dry food can make it more appetizing to him as well. Make sure to shred/cut the chicken as small as possible to mix with the food. Additionally, put the food down for 15 minutes, then pick it up and offer again later (2-4 times a day). If you wet and warm the food, just throw it away and start over each time. Also for a healthy, adult dog, it's ok if he goes a day or two without eating while you're transitioning. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! At 4 weeks you can start to wean bottle feeding. I would start with soft canned puppy food for 1 week then mix in wet dry food over another week. By 6 weeks the puppy should be able to eat dry food or moistened dry food. To help Tobi wean and to get used to dry food, I would soak a high quality puppy formulated dry food in warm water until soft. Then mix that with the cerelac to make a mush the consistency of oatmeal. Over the next two weeks, gradually increase the amount of dry puppy food and decrease the amount of water and cerelac you use until he is eating the dry puppy food only. Best of luck.

You may need to add water to the dry food to soften it up for her to eat. You can also add puppy milk to the food so she is familiar with the food. Once she’s on the puppy food you can switch to regular water. I would have it available now so she gets used to it. Kisses to Fendi!

I would try canned puppy food as she is young and may now be able to easily chew the dry yet. You can also soak the dry food in warm water until its soft and she may eat it that way. Mixing the canned with the rice will get her started eating dog food and you can gradually change her over to dry as she ages. Most dogs love canned food so try several varieties to see what Cloud will eat. To get proper nutrition she needs to eat dog food so she can grow and be healthy. Congratulations on your new puppy - Phoenix is absolutely adorable! Puppies begin to get their baby teeth around 5-8 weeks of age, so Phoenix is just around that age. You can check his mouth for signs of teeth eruption and begin feeding him dry food if a majority of his baby teeth are present. He can continue to have moistened puppy food, but slowly transition to dry puppy food over the next week or so.
