Why does my puppy's tongue hang out? Is it normal or a health issue?

Puppies this small don't have teeth to keep the tongue in the mouth, so it's common to see them sticking their tongue out a little. However, this does seem to be out a little more than normal, which may indicate that he has an overly large tongue for his snout. I wouldn't worry too much about this right now unless he is having difficulty suckling or other issues. It's definitely possible that it won't stick out as much as he ages. You can have the vet evaluate him better when you take him in for his first vaccines around 6-8 weeks of age. I hope that helps and all is well with your pup.

He has a very short snout, so this may be because his tongue is too long and there is not enough space for his tongue inside the mouth. This is very likely, especially if he can freely move his tongue. If his tongue appears paralysed you need to take him to your veterinarian for an exam to find out why. There could be various reasons for this.

Unfortunately this is just how she was made and nothing can really be done to prevent this. This is a common problem in short nosed breeds like pugs. They usually have the same tongue length as normal dogs but not enough space to store it. I think she is quite a cutie pie!

It could just be normal for him but you should have a vet do an oral examination to make sure he doesn't have a dental problem and/or a problem with the his jaw. If your vet doesn't identify a problem and he is eating and drinking fine then it is probably just normal for him.

Depending on which teeth and how many are removed it is not uncommon for some dogs to not be able to keep their tongue in after extractions. This can also be a nervous behavior or a sign of nausea. It is unlikely neurological if there are no other signs such as difficulty swallowing or blinking or any changes in facial symmetry

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! At 4-5 weeks old, it is common for puppies to sleep a lot. They typically become more active around 6-8 weeks. If he is just starting to grow teeth there will be nothing to hold his tongue in his mouth so sticking out is not abnormal. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! She is adorable! Some cats do this and it is normal. It doesn't usually indicate that they are sick. They tend to stick a bit of their tongue out when they are relaxed and/or sleeping. It isn't an indication of stress. Sometimes it goes away with age.
