How soon can my puppy with tapeworm safely sleep in my bed again?

Hello, sorry to hear about your pups. You can cuddle your dogs and allow them to hang out with you as long as they are not defecating in unwanted areas. They will typically shed worms and eggs on their feces for up to 5-7 days after deworming. Precautions to take at home include cleaning any feces immediately after they poop and washing your hands immediately after picking up after them. Most common route of infection to humans is through fecal to oral, so by thoroughly washing your hands after cleaning for them, you will reduce your chanced of becoming infected. The Praziquantel should kill the tapeworm within a few hours. The tapeworm will be eliminated with all its segments (proglottids) with the feces. I would think this happens within 2 days at the longest.

Unfortunately there is no way to stop cats from shedding the tapeworm segments. You don't have to keep her quarantined if you don't want to . I understand the segments are gross and you have a toddler but the segments are not harmful. The only way your toddler would get tapeworms would be from ingesting an infected flea. I would be more worried about getting the fleas under control. So, if Yuki had fleas, they are definitely in your house so you should treat the house for fleas as well. Oh no. This is a nuisance to deal with for sure. Tapeworms are contagious to people, but it would require ingesting (eating) a live worm to become infective. As long as you clean up the feces and use good hygiene (washing your hands and avoid putting hands in the mouth after touching your pet or any live worms), then you are less likely to infest yourself. Clean up the poop quickly and don’t let your pet around other dogs or cats to avoid transmission until you can get Coco treated. Best wishes and don’t forget to also get Coco on a good flea preventative (ie Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica, Vectra etc) at your vet to avoid further infection with tapeworms. Take care.

Tapeworms require an intermediate host so a pet cannot transmit them directly to other pets or people. Other pets would have to eat the intermediate host (most often a flea carrying tapeworm eggs) to get a tapeworm infection. I would ensure that Milton has (and continues to be) on monthly flea control, and that he received an appropriate deworming treatment for tapeworms. As long as the fleas are well controlled, the tapeworms should die away and not recur. The only way that humans can get infected by tapeworms is to ingest an infected flea, so it is safe to say the risk is low! I hope this helps, and that Milton is doing well!

Unless she has feces on her hair and if she defecates when around other dogs, she will not pass on the worms just by playing with other dogs. However, you cannot say for sure whether or not she has microscopic eggs stuck to her fur or if she will defecate around the other dogs. I would play it safe and finish off the deworming medication and recheck the stool in 7 days (from starting the medication) before socializing her with any other dogs. If she defecates and you pick it up, there is no way to tell if you got every microscopic egg off the ground. If she does defecate outside, it is recommended to remove the top 8 inches of soil from the area to ensure you have removed all eggs. I would also recommend regularly cleaning her bedding so that she does not re-infect herself and that you are using a bleach solution (3 cups bleach to 1 cup water) to spray surfaces down.
