Why is my puppy's leg still swollen with a persistent sack after injury?

This is most likely a seroma which is just a fluid pocket. But a seroma can inhibit healing if it is too big. I would have your vet look at it so they can drain it. Your vet will be able to confirm that it is a seroma and that there isn’t any pus or infection involved. After it is drained you can put a warm compress on it for 10 minutes twice a day to help prevent the fluid from coming back. Sometimes it will return and need to be drained again. Also make sure you are keeping her confined as too much activity can also cause these to form post-op. I hope this helps!

I am sorry to hear about Scooby. It is difficult to say how long it might take for swelling to go down because we do not know the cause. We can have swelling due to an abscess, cellulitis, edema (fluid buildup in the leg), a tumor or mass, trauma and development of a seroma or hematoma, or swelling due to a fracture. If the swelling is still present I would consider additional testing such as an x-ray of the leg, or ultrasound of the leg. If the vet is fairly certain it is due to infection then it could take longer than 4 days for the swelling to resolve but he may need to continue the antibiotics longer.

In the picture is not great but that looks swollen. While sprains can swell, swelling is more common with broken bones. Both conditions are painful. I recommend to have Oreo see her veterinarian today who will likely need an x-ray to check for a broken bone. Just like with humans, some broken bones can heal with a cast but others need surgery. Hello. I am sorry about your concerns about Chewy. It is possible that this is just a significant bruise & possible hematoma under the skin ( & probably in the muscle ) that is just taking a long time to resolve. A simple seroma should have resolved by now, but if there was a large blood clot that formed from the trauma, that may take a bit longer to resolve. The other, but less likely possibility is that the joint capsule at the scapulohumeral junction ( where the upper leg bone connects to the shoulder ) has torn. This can result in the leakage of joint fluid into the surrounding tissues. This can be repaired surgically if necessary. Your veterinarian will probably recommend an x-ray & try to sample the fluid to see if it is blood tinged ( a seroma ), bloody ( a hematoma ), or clear & stringy ( joint fluid ). None of these is life-threatening, but if this is joint fluid, Chewy could wind up with some arthritis in the shoulder. So do not worry too much until you have a chance to have things looked at. I can see the swelling from the pictures you posted. It appears the swelling goes form the foot all the way to the knee. I see that you live in an area where snake bite is possible. I would check thoroughly for any punctures along the entire leg and see if Diamond is painful in any particular area. If not, other causes of swelling like this could include infection, allergic reaction, trauma, cancer, among others. Sometimes swelling in an entire limb can be caused by decreased lymphatic flow - this can be caused by damage to lymph nodes or a structure under the skin or inside the body that is impinging on the lymph flow. I have also seen swelling like this with a flare-up of a mast cell tumor elsewhere on the body. I agree with your vet; if the medications prescribed to not make a difference, additional diagnostics are warranted. They may include bloodwork, abdominal x-rays, tick testing, or sampling of any small masses found.

Like most bite wounds, this one has gotten infected because bacteria was introduced below the skin, forming an abscess. Remy is in good spirits now, and that is good, but if this isn't treated by your vet it can become a systemic infection and cause major illness. Remy needs to have the wound drained, flushed, potentially sutured closed because it is open below the superficial layer of skin, and then placed on antibiotics. Therefore, yes he will need to be seen by your vet to have this wound properly cared for. I hope that he gets this resolved soon. Take care.

Poor Oreo! Please call a vet near you to have her seen immediately to help treat the swelling, as this could be an allergic reaction, and could become life threatening. Oreo may have ingested something she is allergic to or have been bitten/stung by something she is allergic to, and your vet can help direct treatment to help prevent worsening of her symptoms.
