My puppy swallowed a toy and has diarrhea. Could it be an obstruction?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Signs of a blockage are usually not eating, lethargy and vomiting. Rarely (less than 10%) just diarrhea. It is most likely an upset stomach. I would avoid giving beef raw hides. If the diarrhea is bad then fast him for 12-24 hours then offer a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. I wish you the best!

Sadly it is very possible that Onyx has a partial obstruction in the upper GI tract from swallowing the soft toy. I am glad that he is acting normally, but the vomiting after eating is very concerning. I recommend having him examined by a veterinarian and likely having x-rays taken to look for signs of an obstruction in the GI tract. The sooner, the better, to prevent possible damage to the GI tract, dehydration or more serious complications. Onyx may need surgery or a scoping procedure to remove an obstruction.

It doesn't sound like an obstruction - not impossible, but usually they won't be able to keep their food or water down. So, I think it is less likely. He is probably drinking a lot because of the diarrhea. If you are worried about an obstruction though, you need to get him back to your vet for a follow-up and x-rays. If you want to try something else at home I would suggest this: 1. Give ONE dose of Immodium. They come in 2mg tablets. Give him one tablet. Please, ONE dose only or you will cause other issues. You can use generic - loperamide. 2. No food for 6-8 hours. Nothing. Water is OK. 3. After 6-8 hours then start feeding small amounts of a bland diet every few hours. Bland foods like: scrambled eggs, plain rice, plain pasta, boiled chicken or turkey, human baby foods (meat flavors). No butter, oil or spices on the food. If all if going well do this for a few days and then slowly transition him back to his regular food. 4. Continue the Proviable as directed. If he starts vomiting at any time he needs to see the vet ASAP. Otherwise, try this and see how he responds. Hope this helps. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Dre. Hopefully he passed all of the plastic and is feeling better. If not, I recommend that he sees a veterinarian for x-rays of his belly. An obstruction is a very serious problem and typically requires surgery to relieve. So if he is not acting back to normal, he will need imaging by a veterinarian. Even if x-rays were taken initially, it is worth repeating them given the foreign object seen in the stool. I hope this information helps!

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I would not be too concerned that she has not defecated yet today. The diarrhea may be due to stress colitis, or inflammation of the colon secondary to the stress of boarding. This should resolve on its own with a bland diet as you are feeding her. You can also try adding in 2 teaspoons of metamucil fiber powder to her meals twice daily to help bulk up her stool. She may not be defecating yet because her stools forming up and not coming out as quickly. I would monitor for signs of vomiting that could indicate that the watch band that she ate is causing a blockage of her intestines. This is a surgical emergency. It is possible she will pass the watch band by herself in her feces, so I recommend monitoring her feces over the next few days for passage of the band. I hope this is helpful!

Vomiting and inappetence can occur from many conditions such as foreign body ingestion and obstruction, pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. I am concerned that he could be showing signs of an obstruction which is something that requires therapy which sometimes includes surgery. I recommend that you have Jager evaluated by a veterinarian at this point for further assessment and treatment. This will likely require bloodwork and abdominal imaging in terms of diagnostics. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least your veterinarian could start him on medications to make him feel better. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. Good luck and have a good night!

It looks like there is some mucus on her poop, which can be normal. The rest of her poop looks normal, and since everything else with her is as usual, I suspect it's just mucus which is nothing to be worried about. I hope this helps!
