My 8-week-old puppy is straining to poop with mucus. What to do?

one of my dog's 8 week old puppy is constipated, ans has some mucus coming out, he tries and tries to poop but nothing comes out, please what can I do to help him?

Poor pup! If nothing at all is coming out except some mucus, it would really be best to have him seen by a vet tonight if possible - severe constipation like this is very uncomfortable, and he may need an enema along with prescription medication to treat it effectively.

If this isn't an option for you, you could try giving him a spoonful of plain canned pumpkin if you have some available - this helps to increase fiber and moisture in the stool, which can make it softer. I would also encourage the puppy to drink fluids, either water or low-sodium beef or chicken broth, which can also help to soften the stool a bit. He should still be seen by a veterinarian as soon as you are able to take him, especially if he is still not able to poop by morning.

Oh no! It's possible that your puppy is having diarrhea, and is not actually constipated, which is very common. It might be constantly straining because it has loose stool and the urge to go, but no feces present. This is common with parasitic infections, and if the bitch and the pups have not been dewormed regularly, this is very likely. I would strongly recommend taking a fecal sample to your veterinarian to be evaluated for parasites/bacterial infection. I have seen many puppies over the years who actually prolapse their little rectums straining so hard with diarrhea. If this happens, you need to have a simple surgical procedure done to fix the prolapse. I can't think of a case in my experience where a puppy of this age has actually been constipated, but it is possible. If the puppy is straining consistently enough, you may need to take him to an emergency clinic to prevent a prolapse from occurring. Otherwise, deworm the litter and the mom now and again in two weeks.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is a possibility if there is a high parasite burden or if it is eating a poor quality diet. If you are seeing the puppy strain to poop, it is likely it has diarrhea. Either way, I would take the pup to a vet to know for sure. Bring a fresh stool sample to check for microscopic parasite eggs. Good luck and kisses to the pup!

It looks like there may be some rectal swelling/possible prolapsing if your puppy is straining hard to go to the bathroom and can't. If he is unable to pass stool at all and the swelling is still there or growing in size, it would be best to seek veterinary care in person ASAP. If he is able to pass some stool and is a little constipated, some pureed pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling) or plain yogurt can help, but if he is straining to the point of causing rectal swelling/protrusion or is retching like there is something stuck preventing him from going potty, veterinary care is needed.

Puppy constipated after new kibble? Pumpkin not helping, what now?

Hello. It is very uncommon for puppies to have constipation, so I would be worried that maybe a piece of stick or mulch or bone (most common culprits) may be stuck in the colon or rectum. You can always look and if something is stuck try to gently manoeuvre it out, however be very careful not to cause a cut, as a cut in the bum is hard to heal due to the bacteria in the poop. If you are seeing something stuck it may be best to have it removed by a vet. If it is constipation, I would be switching the food that you are feeding to a better quality food. Canned pumpkin (NOT pumpkin pie filling, just plain canned pumpkin) is very good as well at increasing the fibre and helping with constipation. Also, if you are feeding any bones then stop this, and it could be that Boo has a colon full of re-formed bone bits and this will require a veterinarian to remove bit by bit, likely under anaesthesia. (yet another reason to never feed bones to dogs). I would overall recommend that Boo be seen by a vet as there could be many different things causing his issues. Good luck with Boo.

Puppy constipated, crying, and has a painful swollen rear. What to do?

It looks like he might have a little rectal prolapse. If your vet isn’t available, you can try to treat this at home as follows: This will sound weird, but bear with me. ;) Get some table sugar, dissolve it in a little water (say maybe 3 tablespoons of sugar and just enough water to dissolve it. Soak the corner of a washcloth, paper towel, or a piece of gauze with the sugar water and then apply it directly to his bottom. Let it be in contact for 10-15 minutes. (Be PATIENT here.). The osmotic pull of the sugar will reduce the swelling in the prolapsed tissue and it may got back in on its own. If it does not, using a gloved hand, use some KY jelly and VERY GENTLY try to push it back in. Be aware that it may pop back out. If it’s a recurrent problem, he may need to see a vet to have a temporary “purse string” suture placed. Make sure he’s been dewormed. Add a little fiber to his diet, about 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of canned pumpkin daily may help “regulate” him, and a dog probiotic would also be a good idea. I hope that’s helpful! Poor girl! You can try to give her 1/2 teaspoon of canned pumpkin twice a day to help increase her fiber. Also make sure she is drinking enough water. You can add some warm water to her canned food if you need to. I hope this helps!

Why is my 10-week-old puppy straining and crying with hard poop?

Rex needs more fiber in his diet to bulk up the stool and make it softer. I would give a tablespoon of plain canned pumpkin with each meal. It will add both fiber and fluid. I recommend adding additional water in the food also as dogs that are dehydrated will also have hard stool. Make sure he’s not eating dirt and feed a good quality dog food two to three times daily. Puppy hasn't pooped in 2 days while on cold medicine. Is this normal?

Hi, and thanks for your question. Mild constipation that lasts no more than two days can usually be resolved at home with increased fiber and hydration. Canned pumpkin (not pie filling, just the straight-up pumpkin) or liquid paraffin can be used, and should work straight away in the following 8 hours from administration. DO NOT TRY to give an enema as it could be dangerous and cause electrolyte imbalances and colon perforation. If constipation lasts more than 24 hours from administration of those or 48 hours in general, a check up at your local vet is required. Why is my 1-year-old Maltese mix straining to poop and can't walk?

I am sorry to hear about your pup! I would look at her rear end and check to be sure she doesn't have a matted area of hair/stool covering her anus and preventing her from pooping, as this can sometimes happen in long haired dogs. In mild cases of constipation, adding a teaspoon of canned pumpkin to their food to provide fiber can sometimes relieve constipation. If, however, she is lethargic, not eating, does not stop straining/cannot relax, or is vomiting then she needs veterinary care today. If she does have a fecal mat covering her anal area she will likely need to see the vet to have the area shaved and cleaned.
