Is my puppy's spay incision normal after 3 days of constant jumping?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 4 months and 19 days old | 42 lbs

Hi I was just wondering if this looks like a normal 3 days post op spay incision? My puppy has been very hyper and jumps a lot despite our efforts to keep her calm. We started locking her in her crate, but I just want to make sure her incision is okay and that she hasn’t done any damage. Thank you!

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Kala and for providing pictures, they are very helpful. The incision itself looks ok but I'm wondering if there is some swelling at the end of the incision. I'd keep an eye on it for now and if there is swelling there and it gets bigger, have her seen by a vet. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This can be normal just slight inflammation from the sutures can cause it to look or feel bumpy. As long as it isn’t open, there is no discharge and she is acting normal I wouldn’t worry.

The incision looks normal for a freshly spayed dog. It is not exactly a very pretty incision, but it will heal nicely eventually. She is likely shaking due to after effects from the anesthesia and pain. You should give her the pain medicine given to you for her by your vet, of if he did not give you any, ask him for some pain medicine.

From the photo this appears to be a normal incision. Monitor for swelling, pain or discharge from the incision site. If concerned I would contact the vet that performed her surgery to see if they offer recheck for surgical patients.

My dog's spay incision looks red. Is it normal after running stairs?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The only thing I can't tell from the picture is if the skin is together at the red area. If it is then I think it is fine. The red area appears to be a scab or dried blood that will likely heal. Just be sure she isn't licking the incision (use an E-collar or T-shirt) and that you are keeping her exercise restricted (no running, jumping, stairs and leash walks outside only). Good luck!

My dog's spay incision looks open after surgical glue. Is this normal?

I received the picture that you forwarded to customer service. I presume the area that you are concerned about is the area outlined in red. When we close the skin with surgical glue, there can be a small amount of tissue that looks like it does in the picture. I don't see anything that is particularly concerning in that picture. Make sure to keep Mia rested and use an e-collar so she cannot lick at the incision. The area that you outlined should not look any larger and should not ooze any discharge. My dog just had spay surgery. Is her incision normal on day one?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The incision, based on this one photo, looks normal to me for one day post-op. It is not uncommon for dogs to be lethargic a day after surgery. If she is wearing a cone collar, many dogs will not walk or move around much due to the cone. That being said, I do not recommend you take the cone off. Eventually they will figure out how to move around with the cone. If she is not wearing a cone, she should be. Ultimately, you know her best. If she does not seem right to you then call your vet or take her to an urgent care vet. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

My dog's spay incision is red and scabby after a week. Is it normal?

Unfortunately only one picture is attached, and I think it may be the earliest picture given your description in the question. If the incision looks more red and scabby, that suggests infection. My dog's spay incision is swollen and red. Is this normal healing?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The incision looks inflammed, but this could be part of the normal healing process. If there is any discharge, OR if the wound looked better than this previously and is now looking MORE red than say Friday or Saturday, I would take her back to the vet right away. If it is steadily looking better, and she is eating, drinking, pooping and peeing normally, then you can continue to monitor it. Best of luck with Lilo.
