My puppy's skin is irritated after moving to the country. What's wrong?

I would recommend taking Blue to a veterinarian. It looks like scars from the picture but if her skin is turning red then the redness can be allergies. It looks almost like she has hives but the picture is not too great in showing that. I would recommend a veterinarian immediately if she has bumps (hives). It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

The cefpodoxime should help with the bacterial infection component and the prednisone should help with the itch component. Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. Poor Snow! Her skin looks really reactive. I really think you should take Snow to your vet for an exam at your earliest convenience. She may need oral antibiotics or some anti-inflammatory medications. I don't think it is an emergency though. To me it looks like a contact dermatitis (allergy). Poison ivy is possible but it is actually pretty rare in dogs. Benadryl is fine to give but you need to make sure you are giving enough. Dogs take a MUCH higher dose than we do. The dose is 1mg/pound of body weight. For example, 25 pound dog should get one 25mg capsule/tablet. If she is 50 pounds, then 2 of the 25mg capsules. You can round up if needed as it is pretty safe to give. She can have that every 12 hours. Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Hello. I am sorry to hear that Hendrix is having trouble with his skin. Skin irritation can be caused by many things, but most commonly is allergies. This can be due to the environment (your soaps/detergents, grass, pollen, certain plants, carpet cleaners), or can be due to food allergies. There are other medical causes as well. I would suggest trying a diet trial with Hendrix and see if you can find a food that he is better on. You can discuss which diet to go on with your vet. 80% of the time an allergy is to a meat protein, so switching proteins (go from a beef diet to a fish diet for example) is a good place to start.
