My puppy only eats human food. Is it safe or does he need puppy food?

Feeding from the table can make your puppy fat, and also there are several human foods that are toxic to dogs. Some dogs fed from the table begun to refuse to eat their regular dog food, which is nutritionally balanced for them (while table food is not). You need to be strong and stop giving in. Knight is training you, instead of the other way around. He will not starve. If all you offer is dog food, eventually he will eat it. Chapatis, oats, and rice are not a balanced or healthy diet for a dog. Dogs need protein and calcium as well as many other vitamins and nutrients, and that diet you provided doesn't give him that. I see that Max is six months old, so he needs a puppy formulated food. Puppies need higher amounts of calories, protein, and calcium than adult dogs, and a puppy formulated food will provide that for him. I would not give him human food any longer, and put him on a puppy dog food until he is 12 months. Then he should be on an adult dog food. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I would also have a health check for him with the vet. He may be feeling unwell from have a nutrient deficient diet, or he could also have a medical illness causing the loss of appetite. Please keep in mind that even if it is a medical illness causing him to lose his appetite, the current diet you are feeding him is very poor and he needs to be on a puppy food. It can be normal for some dogs to be picky eaters, especially if they are rewarded with human food if they wait long enough. It is not normal however for Yuki to be losing weight. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian to rule out a medical problem first - if she seems otherwise healthy you can then discuss trying to find a commercial dog food that she likes (canned food might be an option), or discuss talking to a nutritionist to formulate a balanced home cooked diet.

The best thing to make Moonlight healthy is to feed him only puppy food. Many human foods are toxic to dogs, and the rest should not be part of their daily diet. I would feed him a puppy food. Best of luck.

As you probably realize this is not a balanced diet for a growing puppy. If you haven't already I would recommend trying various canned puppy foods with a little chicken and rice mixed in. If he absolutely won't eat you can talk to your veterinarian about whether or not it is safe for you to leave food out and wait for him to eat when he's hungry - this could take a day or even longer. If you don't mind cooking for him you could also ask your veterinarian for a referral to a nutritionist to help create a recipe for a balanced home cooked diet.

Please don't give in and let him eat human foods. Once that starts he will not go back to eating dog food; human foods are not balanced for dogs nutritionally. I recommend that you not allow him to be in the same room with you while you are eating. He is not begging because he is hungry. He is begging as a way to get food from you which is a type of bonding thing for them. It is really not a good idea. I do not know what types of food you have available to choose from in your country but maybe try to switch to a different one he may like better.
