My puppy isn't eating much in hot weather. When should I feed them?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Heat could defenitely cause your puppies to not want to eat. With that heat it is very important to have an area of shade for them to hide, as well as free access to cool water at all times. Ideally, have a sprinkler or some water source (kiddy pool filled with water) that they can go in to cool down. Dogs overheat very easily and can get very sick with overheating. If it is extremely hot in your area it may be that the heat is decreasing Pogo's appetite some, which can be normal. Feeding smaller meals a little later in the day may help encourage him to eat some, as well as making sure he has access to a cool shaded area with plenty of water. If the refusal to eat continues or you see other signs of illness such as vomiting, diarrhea or extreme lethargy, then bringing him to your vet for an exam is best.

Increases in the environmental temperature can cause dogs to not want to eat. You can try leaving her food out longer, feeding her earlier in the day when it's cooler or feeding her indoors where it could be air-conditioned. With this breed they can be predisposed to certain stomach conditions if only fed once a day. Therefore I would try to get her to eat two meals again if possible.

I would ensure that she has plenty of access to water and you can feed her canned dog food or home cooked food such as chicken breast, ground beef, chicken broth, pumpkin, etc. and see if she will eat more. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Make sure you are feeding Snowball the recommended daily amount. It should say it on the bag. Not every food is the same amount of calories per cup so she may require more per day than her previous diet. Because she gets sick on an empty stomach, I would split the daily amount into 2 or 3 meals a day. It is common for dogs not to eat when its hot- they don't require the calories. As long as she is eating the recommended amount per day I wouldn't be concerned. Good luck and kisses to Snowball!

It is not unusual for puppies to not eat great as they get used to eating solid food. I would recommend you try different kinds of both kibble and canned food. If there is no improvement and he continues to not eat, I would recommend you consider having him evaluated by a veterinarian for that purpose and also to possibly establish care with a veterinarian for recommendations on preventative and early life care. I would definitely take it up at night, as you don't want insects to get into their food. Try feeding them in a cool area when it's hot, and make sure they always have access to plenty of fresh, cool water.
