My puppy breathes loudly and moves in sleep. Is she dreaming or ill?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Jubilee is adorable! I find that puppies, especially when sleeping, breath heavier and faster. If she is anxious or nervous then that could be why she pants while awake. If this is a sudden development or she also isn't feeling well then she should be evaluated by a Vet. If she acting healthy then I think this is normal for her. I hope this helps and I wish Jubilee the best!

Puppies do tend to sleep very deeply and they do dream more than adult dogs. I recommend to record one of these episodes. Start filing before you begin to stimulate her and then record the entire session until she is fully awake. Show it to her veterinarian. This will help to give a better idea of pathology or not. If River is normal when she wakes up and acts normally during the day (eating, drinking, playing, no vomiting, no diarrhea, etc) then I would not worry about it. If she seems sick in any way then I would get her to the vet for an exam. I suggest you take a video of this behavior so you can show your vet when you take River in for her next set of vaccinations so they can give you better advice. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Dogs dream just the way we do, so increased respiratory pattern and sometimes vocalizing happens as well. As long as it is transient and goes back to normal then I would not be worried. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

A lot of what puppies do while sleeping doesn't mean anything is wrong with their health. If she is acting sick when awake then I'd be worried she is in pain or has a fever. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I can understand your concerns with having a new puppy. It is likely that your new puppy is finally starting to come into his own. As your puppy grows and matures he will start to develop his personality. This can lead to higher activity levels and more playfullness. As long as he is still tail wagging, running, jumping and overall seems happy, he is likely just fine. After quick spurts of play, puppies can also have heavy breathing episodes, but it should only last for 1-5 minutes at the most. If your puppy seems like he is in respiratory distress, coughing, gasping for air, etc, then its best to have him evaluated by your vet. At that point I would suspect he may have an airway infection, underlying heart disease, or a laryngeal disorder. However, if your pupy is still playful, eating, drinking and normal acting, then he is likely just fine and is having over exerting moments of play. Just try to limit his play to no more than 20-30 minute intervals two times a day to keep him healthy. I hope this helps and best wishes with your new puppy Winter. Take care.

Hi. This could be normal, especially if dreaming. If he is normal otherwise and breaths normal when awake, you can monitor. If he acting quiet and breathing fast awake, I would get him seen right away.
