My puppy limps after waking up, then runs fine. Is it normal?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 4 months and 22 days old

Whenever Jasper wakes up, he limps with one of his hind legs. After a few minutes he seems to be fine and he'll run around again, is this normal? He's only a pup so id wanna get it checked out if it's signs of arthritis or anything like that.

No, it is not normal for Jasper to limp when he gets up. There are a number of joint diseases that puppies can get that affect them when they are growing. Some of them require treatment to prevent problems later in life and some just require pain medications. I would certainly recommend having your veterinarian examine Jasper to see what is going on and determine the best treatment for him now and to make sure he doesn't have problems later in life.
Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
