Puppy lethargic with discharge and bleeding after spay. Is it normal?

Pet's info: Dog | Black and Tan Coonhound | Female | spayed | 3 months old | 15 lbs

Hi, my 14 week old coonhound puppy was spayed on Thursday and I'm a little concern. She is more lethargic than normal, she has discharge from her vulva when she pees, and there is small amount of watery blood coming from the incision. Is this normal?

Hello, sorry to hear about Kaia. They could indeed have some discharge from the vulva for a few days after spaying. However, any frank blood would not be considered normal and should be addressed immediately. Lethargy can persist for a few days as well, especially if on pain medications.

The watery discharge from the incision could indicate that she is having a small incision infection or that she is developing a seroma (liquid produced by the body) due to excessive movement.

You can cold compress the area 3 times daily for the next 3 days, then switch to warm compress 3 times daily and see if this improves the discharge from the incision. You must keep her rested to allow for full recovery. If you note any persistent discharge from her vulva then she should be evaluated by her veterinarian.

I suggest you get Kaia back to the vet for a follow up exam. The scooting is most likely due to full anal glands. Have your vet check them. Those are not routinely checked before surgery. The panting/whining is likely due to discomfort - maybe from the full anal glands. May be due to post-op surgical pain. The stool looks normal as per the photo. I would not be worried about the size of the BMs at this stage. As a side note, at 5 days post-spay she should not be running around as you described. My dog is lethargic and not peeing after spay surgery. Is this normal?

The incision looks normal. Her behavior is not. I recommend a recheck exam. She could be painful or could have a urinary infection. If the doxycycline is causing a stomach upset they may be able to switch antibiotics. They can put her on pain medication also to make her more comfortable. I recommend feeding wet food with added water in it so she doesn't get dehydrated. Again most dogs are back to normal in a day or two after the surgery so please bring her in for a recheck to make sure there is no complication. My dog just got spayed. Is discharge, panting, odd behavior normal?

Poor Abby! Discharge is not common from surgical incisions, but a very small amount of clear discharge can still be within normal limits. However, if the discharge is bloody or pus-like, this could be indicative of an incisional infection or suture reaction. Regardless, since Abby is panting and acting abnormally, I do recommend taking her to the vet for evaluation since this could be a sign of pain. Until you take her to the vet, be sure to keep an e-collar (cone) on Abby to prevent her from licking at her incision, as this would likely make matters worse. Why is my spayed dog having bloody discharge and lactating?

That is unusual. This may be from spaying her when in heat, and the discharge is just coming out. The hormones also can take up to six weeks to go down so she may be having a false pregnancy even though she’s been spayed. I would watch her closely. These symptoms should resolve over the next few weeks. If the bleeding continues that is not normal and could indicate a problem with the internal incision. Is a small amount of discharge from my puppy's spay incision normal after spay?

Great question! Yes, a small amount of serous discharge is normal, and as long as it isn't excessive or bloody, there's not need to take Kimber into the vet. Keep monitor the incision, make sure she doesn't lick at it by keeping the Ecollar on her at all times, and be sure to contact your vet (or ask us!) with any questions or concerns :-)

My puppy was spayed today. Is dried blood on the incision normal?

The image shows no drips or tracks of blood. This may be some normal post op discharge. If she will allow, you can use a plain, unscented baby wipe to gently clean around the incision. Keep an e-collar (cone) on her and restrict her activity to just leash walks for elimination. Avoid or prevent running, jumping, stairs or rough play as much as possible. If she has a crate, consider crating her for the night. Monitor for active bleeding, discharge, lethargy or pale gums. If any of these develop, she should be seen by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER.
