My puppy is itching and crying from his adaption collar, what to do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is probably irritating the skin. I would try a collar of a different material. Some dogs are just sensitive to certain materials used to make these collars. My dog for example is very sensitive to collars made out of nylon and develops hair loss and dermatitis if used. I would encourage you to try one of a different material. Keep in mind that there is some getting used to on their end but it should not be itchy. Good luck!

I would give Gizmo time to adjust to wearing the harness and collar. If it is really bothering him I would recommend taking everything off when he is inside the house. That is as long as there is no risk to him running outside without a collar. If you see scabbing or reddness then I recommend a veterinarian since that could mean that there is an infection. IF the irritation is where the collar was then this is probably what caused it and it should get better within a few days. if it doesn't get better then you will need to take him to the vet as it could be a more serious skin condition that will require medications.

Yes, but image what a horrible life you would have if you itches all over and someone tied your hands behind your back. I would recommend working with your vet to find a resolution to the itch. Some dogs benefit from a hypoallergenic dog food and others can be managed with medications like Apoquel.

Pars's should have been treated for fleas when he was taken in by the San Diego Humane Society, so he shouldn't have them anymore. He may be annoyed by the collar, so that is why he's itching his neck.

Yes this is a reaction to the collar, likely allergic. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths twice daily for 4 days (make sure you dry it up after disinfection). If you want him to wear the collar then it is best to leave it on so he gets used to it. If you continue to take t off it will reinforce his behavior to cry and whine with it on. Once he gets used to it and does. It mind then you can take it off
