My puppy is hungry, biting, and chewing everything. What can I do?

It's likely that Darby is frustrated about not being able to get somewhere that she wants to go - you can help this problem by calling her name and encouraging her to go in a different direction, and rewarding with a treat when she follows you. Biting and mouthing is very normal behavior for a puppy this age - this is how puppies explore the world, and how they instinctively want to play. Make sure that she has a variety of different toys to provide an appropriate outlet for this behavior - long floppy rope or fleece toys for tugging, plush toys for biting and carrying, and smaller toys or balls for chasing and fetching. She should also have lots of different things to lay and chew on, such as bully sticks, rawhide chews, cow or pig ears, and puzzle toys such as a Kong stuffed with peanut butter. She will grow out of this behavior on her own as she gets older, but in the meantime, just redirect her to one of her own toys and use that to play with her instead. If she continues to get overly excited and try to bite, give her something to chew on (such as one of the options I mentioned above) to encourage her to settle down and relax for a while.

As for biting, it is important to stop him from biting and learn that is not appropriate to bite you. When he bites you, do tell him no, but then distract him with a chew toy. Praise him when he starts chewing on that instead, and he will learn that the toy is ok to chew on and not you. You can also try yelping loudly as if you are hurt when he bites you, and that should startle him into stopping. Once he stops, praise him and give him a treat. You can also try time outs. When Chip bites you, yelp loudly, and then remove your hand. Ignore him for 10-20 seconds, and once that time passes, start playing with him again. If he tries to bite you again during the 10-20 seconds, move away, and continue to ignore him. Once the time is over, then you can play with him again. This will teach him that when he plays gently, play continues, and once he bites, play stops.

For puppies, I recommend feeding three times daily. Make sure you are feeding enough food as well. The food you are using should tell you how much to feed him. The biting is behavioral and is a common behavior in puppies. I would recommend using a small spray bottle and every time he bites you, spritz him in the face to deter him from biting. Using puppy pads, with patience and persistence, he will learn to go to the bathroom outside. No it's not likely to be a problem , most puppies chew on various things most of the day and most puppies will look for food more than they should, as long as you are giving her the recommended amount of food that is indicated on her food's label - she should be good, and she will stop chewing on things gradually in about 3-4 months.

Do you think her body weight is appropriate? If she is underweight, she can eat more. If she is normal, you may consider putting her food in treat or puzzle toys so that it takes her longer to eat. She may also be looking for attention. Help her get in more play time or do obedience training to give her mind something to do. If she still seems really hungry, you can try feeding a weight loss food at higher amounts - they usually have more fiber so that it fills the dog up without adding extra calories.

If only Sydney could talk! It could be related to her teething. You may try soaking the kibble in warm water until it is softer. See if she will eat it that way. Its also possible you are feeding her too much. Puppies eat a lot while they are rapidly growing but then the growth slows down and they don't need as many calories (although they are still growing). If soaking the kibble doesn't help or if she begins to show any signs of illness, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian and checked for parasites.
