Puppy still has hookworms after deworming. When to treat again?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, I recommend treating with first round then repeating a round 3-4 weeks after the first. Then her stool rechecked 4 weeks after the 2nd round. Be sure to start your dog on a good heartworm preventative like Intercpetor or Sentinel which can help prevent reinfection with Hookworms. If your dog has been off heartworm preventatives have her tested before restarting. I hope this helps and good luck!

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! HeartguardPlus has pyrantel as an ingredient, which kills adult and immature intestinal parasites. Depending on the stage of infection, it can take several days for all of the adult worms to die and be passed in the feces. It is normal to see different types of worms in the feces, as this product kills several types of worms, which are very common in puppies. If you notice that your puppy is continuing to have diarrhea after several days, I recommend bringing a stool sample from Blaze to your vet to determine which parasites are present. How long ago was she treated for Hookworms? Did she receive a second treatment? Typically with Hookworms two treatments are needed. I would also recommend rechecking a stool to make sure she doesn't have any other type of parasites. Did she get into anything recently or any type of new food? Yes do two rounds of this treatment before having Hyatt tested again. Give each treatment two weeks apart. After the two rounds (and wait two weeks after giving him the last treatment), then see the vet. I don't think mail in fecal tests are reliable, it's best he sees the vet to get tested. Cocoa looks like she has a severe respiratory infection as well and would benefit from a prolonged course of antibiotics for her severe nasal discharge. Assuming that the dewormer given was appropriate for the types of worms/intestinal parasites that she has, she would typically need to be dewormed again in 2 weeks and have a reaper exam to confirm that she is negative for intestinal parasites in approximately 3 weeks. Pyrantel is effective against roundworms, hookworms and whipworms. For Tapeworms, she would need praziquantel or a broad spectrum dewormer such as Drontal Plus. For Giardia she would need metronidazole and Panacur and for coccidia, Albon is the medication of choice. All of these parasites are zoonotic and contagious to people and other dogs as well. Diligent handwashing after handling is recommended, as is diligent environmental cleanup as she can easily become re-infected if she walks back over stool left in the backyard and licks her paws. Aurora-what a lovely name! I bet she's a cute little thing :) We typically recommend repeating deworming treatment every 3 weeks (21 days) in young pups as the deworming medication only acts on certain life-stages of the worms living inside the dog. If Aurora has a heavy worm burden inside you can expect to see some dead/almost dead worms passing in her stool-this is normal. If Aurora continues to have diarrhea a checkup with your regular vet would be recommended. Whilst internal parasites can be a common cause of soft stool in young dogs there can be a myriad of other possible causes, including coccida, parvo virus and inappropriate diet.
