What's the best high-fiber dry food for puppy anal gland issues?

I like hydrolyzed protein diets for the hypoallergenic diet trial. Hills z/d and Purina HA are my 2 favorites. They make the protein sources so small that the immune system can not recognize it as an allergen. Diet trials should be continued for 12 weeks to know if they are helping. I personally do not like Blue Buffalo at all. They have had serious quality control problems which they have admitted due to the fact that they don't own their own factories. They therefore give the recipe to someone to make, and have no control over whether or not the recipe is followed exactly. Plus many colleagues have reported an increase in gas with this food. I would not recommend Blue Buffalo for Fiffy. As for the other two foods, between the two of them I would recommend the Nutro Max. It's a better quality food in my opinion. Just so you are aware, grains are beneficial to dogs and I do not recommend feeding a dog a grain free food unless they have a proven grain allergy, which isn't very common at all in dogs. Food allergies are the least common type of allergies in dogs, and when they do have a food allergy, it is most commonly related to protein not grain. There are very few dogs who have true grain allergies. It is beneficial for Fiffy's health to feed her grains, and brands that I would recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I hope this all helps!

I recommend a product called Glandex that seems to work well. You give it to them every day. It comes in a powered form and a chewy treat form. A word of caution about grain free diets. I often see dogs who have anal gland issues or constipation issues on these diets. I think it must be related to the fiber. There can be other concerns as well but the majority of dogs on these diets do just fine. However, most dogs do not have food allergies (less than 10% of ALL allergies are to food). Additionally, most of these food allergy dogs are allergic to protein, not grains. I do recommend a high quality food such as Royal Canin or Purina Pro Plan. Lastly, it doesn’t make a difference if the food is canned or kibble. It’s all about the fiber amount and quality. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

I am not familiar with this type of dog food. In general, I tend to recommend Hill's Science Diet and the high end Purina products. My reason for this is because these are the only two brands who do extensive food testing on all of their diets prior to putting them on the market. I also feed Wellness to my own cats and dogs, but this is based simply on my own anecdotal positive experience with this diet. In terms of extra fiber, you can add small amounts of fruits and vegetables. Canned pumpkin is often a good addition that most dogs eat up. Hope this makes sense.

I'm sorry Hulk has been having problems with soft stool! It could be that his diet was causing the diarrhea, but it could also be that he had a GI illness or ate something rotten. It's good that the bland diet has helped clear it up, and I would find another food to feed him besides Blue Buffalo. I am not a fan at all of it, there are many cases of dogs having GI issues on it. It also have very poor quality control over how it is made, and they have had a number of recalls. Brands of food I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. You can get his used to one of these new brands by slowly adding it to the bland diet, and over time, increasing the amount of the new food and decreasing the bland diet until he is eating the bland diet only. I am sorry to hear about your problems with Bell! I have had some owners find the product Glandex to be helpful (though not all) so that is worth a try. Others have found probiotics such as Fortiflora or Prostora, or Omega fatty acid supplements to be helpful.

I'm sorry that Prince has been having problems with diarrhea! I personally am not a fan at all of Blue Buffalo for a number of reasons, and many of my colleagues have seen dogs with GI problems from being fed Blue Buffalo. There are a couple of brands of dog food that I typically recommend which have canned food options such as Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I hope this helps :-)
