Should I worry if my 4-month-old puppy breathes heavily at rest?

Pet's info: Dog | Great Pyrenees | Male | 4 months and 3 days old | 38 lbs

My 4 mo/old pup has been breathing heavily even at rest, I’ve been putting it off as the warm weather. We’re trying to have water easily available as well as ice. I was wondering if it could be apart of teething and growing since dogs pant to help relax and if this should be something to be worried about.

The increased respiratory rate could be from him dissipating heat but it could also be pathological. I cannot tell you for sure just based on your description. I suggest you take a video of him breathing heavy at rest and then take him in to your vet for an examination. Show the vet the video and see what they think. The vet will take that video combined with their examination findings and let you know if it seems like his breathing is normal or abnormal. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Dogs dream and they can show behaviors such as barking, leg movement, and breathing changes in response to their dreams. If River is normal when she wakes up and acts normally during the day (eating, drinking, playing, no vomiting, no diarrhea, etc) then I would not worry about it. If she seems sick in any way then I would get her to the vet for an exam. 52 breaths per minute is considered tachypneic and points to some breathing problem such as an upper respiratory or pulmonary congestion or a heart condition. The fact that this is even worse when she is resting is also pointing to a possible heart condition. I suggest you schedule an exam with your veterinarian for an exam.

Should I worry if my 8-week-old puppy pants fast when trying to sleep?

I would recommend bringing him in for an exam. Sometimes rapid breathing can be a sign of discomfort or illness. It is possible he may need a few rounds of deworming, or could have an infection and associated fever. Either way, around 8 weeks is when he should be getting his first round of vaccines and an exam, so I would simply talk to your veterinarian at that appointment.
