Why is my puppy losing hair, itching, dandruff, and odd poop?

I don't think this is seasonal shedding. I would be concerned about causes of hair loss and itching in a puppy, including fleas, mange, lice, infections (bacterial or yeast), and ringworm. A vet examination will be able to help you figure out the cause and best treatment. I would also discuss the diarrhea with the vet. Possible causes include food intolerance or allergies, intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, bacterial or viral infection, stress colitis, among others. Even though Bear was dewormed, the vet should probably do a fecal floatation test to check for intestinal parasites.

I would try not to bathe him too often as it could make his skin worse. I would try to find a shampoo that is for puppies and oatmeal based. I would bathe him once every 7-14 days unless he gets dirty or instructed by a vet after he has been examined. I would also make sure he is on a high quality flea prevention. The best place to look is at your local vet clinic. You can also try Benadryl twice a day. See link below. You can also start him fish oil or omega 3 fatty acids. With him being a puppy, they usually do poop a lot. It could be just because he is a puppy, but if he has any intestinal parasites, this could explain how thin he is and how much he is going to the bathroom. I would have you vet take a look at him poop sample and make sure there aren't any parasites that they need to get rid of. I would also start to increase the amount of food you are feeding him to help increase his weight. Also, make sure he is on a puppy food. Your vet should be able to look at him and tell you how much to feed him daily. I would continue to feed him twice a day. I hope this helps!

Poor King! His itching and scabs could be a result of mange, ringworm, or allergies (although he is quite young to develop allergies). When dogs become excessively itchy, they sometimes scratch themselves enough that they can develop skin infections. King should see his vet for an exam and skin scraping to rule out mites/mange and have a Wood's lamp evaluation or ringworm culture. Ringworm and some types of mange can be transmitted to humans and other pets. King may need antibiotics, antifungal medications and steroids to control his itching and any underlying issues. There is a chance that the leaf he ate may have caused some mild gastroenteritis that led to a bit of soft stool or could be coincidental if he has any intestinal parasites. A vet should check his stool sample for parasites. If his stool is slightly soft but he is otherwise acting normally, you can also try a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days before transitioning back to his normal puppy food.

Poor Muskwa! If he is that itchy, I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian. There are medications like Apoquel and Cytopoint which can stop the itching but you can only get those from your vet. sometimes anti-histamines can help but they are not as strong as the above medications. You will need to call your vet for dosing because pharmacy law prohibits online vets from dosing medications. I hope this helps.

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I think his weight is perfect, & you have him on an excellent puppy food. You can keep him on this for up to the next couple of months, but at around 6 months of age, change him to a large breed puppy food. He can stay on this until he is 12 - 18 months, then go to an adult maintenance food. The itching can be either from allergies, skin mites ( such as demodex ), or he has picked up a bit of a puppy staph infection. Make sure you are not seeing fleas, & you are feeding him from a stainless steel or porcelain dish - no plastic. He is the perfect age to begin his puppy vaccinations, so be sure to point out the skin issues at this time. Take care.

Hi. Skin problems can be difficult to diagnose and difficult to resolve. Your breed of dog tends to have allergies but as a puppy he may be a bit young for this. He could be having a reaction to something in his environment, have dry skin, or may have a parasite on the skin called Demodex. This parasite can cause fur loss in different areas and is more common in puppies as well as your breed of dog. You did not mention the exact medication that he is on so I cannot comment on that however I would recommend to add a high quality soothing and hydrating shampoo. Virbac has high quality shampoos that many veterinarians use and now it can be purchased on amazon! I particularly like the episoothe shampoo and resicort

I would give him fish oil in the diet to improve the coat. I recommend an aloe and oatmeal moisturizing shampoo, and make sure you are using a flea control product as having fleas causing excessive itching will irritate the skin. Also as he’s a puppy please make sure he’s been treated for internal parasites which can cause a poor hair coat. To control the itching you can use Benadryl.
